HI Wordlings,
We were at Powell out of Halls Crossing from June 24 - 28. Spent our first night in Iceberg, then continued on to the Escalante for the rest of the trip. The new Halls/Bullfrog area is filling up. Lots of docks everywhere. But no problem getting out and underway. Happy to report that I didn't see any algae anywhere. I suspect the wind and waves churned it all up? That wrecked boat is still there, on the left side of the channel heading downstream, and just before you get to Slick Rock. I wonder if NPS has contacted the owners to have them get it out? It would be very easy to get out right now. There's another wrecked boat--an old center console--in Iceberg Canyon. Just a bit past the "triangle" cave as you head toward the back of Iceberg, and on the left side. On Friday, a yellow float plane flew around the Escalante for about an hour. Pretty cool! Found an old houseboat canopy frame in about 8 inches of water in the back of a finger in the Escalante. If we actually had Trash Trackers this year, we'd be getting that thing out! Too bad.... There was noticeably less boat traffic while we were there--whether that was because of all the previous algae reports, or the high wind forecast, or just plain headaches of dealing with launching at Bullfrog, and everything is now located at Halls--we weren't complaining! The wind blew hard on Friday and Saturday. We had EIGHT lines out, so we were solid and did not move at all. We explored Gregory Natural Bridge in 50 Mile. I finally got to see it in person! There's 67 feet of water at the mouth of 50 Mile, and 20 feet of water under the Bridge. Very nice! We left the Escalante on Sunday morning. Got to Halls around 12:30, just as the afternoon winds kicked back up. All in all, a great trip! The water felt great!
