I can only speak for myself. We woke up the last day and paddled a few miles to Halls and spent a little over an hour loading our gear onto my truck. Then we drove to Page to transfer the boats and her gear to her truck. THEN I drove all the way to San Diego and got home before midnight. BRUTAL! That took one full day to recover. Driving long distance does a number on my body more than paddling.
Promises promises! I hope we run into you or someone like you someday. So far we have only been given shots of whiskey on the October trip 6 months ago which was awesome but hard to keep down (more of a tequila, beer, or...White Zinfandel kinda guy ). It always blows my mind when we run into someone on the lake and they look at us as if we are a bunch of weirdos.
For example, we hiked to the top of HITR and chatted with a guy and his son who drove in. Nobody else in sight and when we mentioned to them that we paddled in, it was as if they could care less. I don't consider myself special nor do I seek attention, I guess I just expected more of an engaging conversation given the fact that there was nobody else around for miles. Then a younger couple showed up as we were heading down and they were practically avoiding conversation with us. Maybe we just stunk really bad...
Trust me it only gets harder, the packing and trip back, as you get older. 20 years from now you will look back at this and wonder how the heck you pulled of that final day from Halls to San Diego, that's NUTS! Although 20 years from now I'm pretty sure you'll have a motor on your boat too lol. I'm usually EXHAUSTED on the drive back to Colorado, hard to stay awake in cold truck A/C while the rest of the family naps.
Dude, I'm telling you if you're on the lake at the same time I'd be glad to share in the bounty of beer, food and comfort! And trust me, there will be good tequilla to be had too! It'll change your outlook on how to do Powell trips.
Regarding the peeps you met at HITR, don't give it a second thought. YES you probably stunk like no other, but there are boat/lake/water people and then there are the others. They might have also been a tad jealous of what you were doing, but they definitely couldn't appreciate it because again, they aren't water people. These are the kind of people that don't get invited on my trips btw.
