Launched on the friday before Memorial Day and got up at 5 from lake Powell resort to launch the boat at stateline expecting a big crowd later. We couldn’t send the houseboat up until 10 so we fished a bit until the houseboat was ready. Around 10 there was still no line to launch. Shocking for Labor Day weekend. Made it up to cookie jar instead of last chance because last chance is past the houseboat rental companies “black line” they advise you not to go past because of fuel and inflated cost if anything goes wrong with the boat.
The fishing was slower than usual but still decent. We caught mostly small fish with a few decent ones mixed in. Topwater was slower than usual as well. Best baits were a chartreuse single tail on a free rig, green pumpkin tube (1/4 oz weight on both) and a spook for topwater. Those smallies were liking the pause while retrieving . We had a few days with minimal wind and the 5” wacky worm slapped em.
It was hard to figure out what depth the smallies were consistently hanging out in. We caught a lot in shallow water right next to the bank but I would say most of the fish caught were near submerged islands on the deep side of the color change…15 feet give or take. Caught almost every species. No crappie. Overall a great trip, Powell is the best place on earth. Tight lines.
