Overloaded houseboat burying human waste in the sand

I don't think we should let NPS push it under the rug, as winter comes on I fear that could happen...... plus I cringe to think how much of this has washed into the lake with monsoon season.

When I reported this incident, NPS told me that they find these "poop beaches" all the time on the lake, but never have enough direct evidence of who the perpetrators were to do anything about it. He seemed genuinely glad they had real evidence this time to do something about it by holding the perps accountable for their actions. I still hold out hope they will provide an update soon, and will post as soon as I hear anything either way. I was told in June that a court date, if the situation went that direction, would likely be October.

As the "thread starter" and witness to this, I've still heard nothing about a court date or anything else. I hope Gem Morris hears back from the GCNRA PR person with a definitive answer.
This really is the point after all, isn't it. I'm getting sick and tired of the "this is under investigation so we can't tell you anything" bs. Obviously the keepers of the pond are those who use and enjoy it. For the nps it's a job, for those of us who revere Powell it is a lifestyle so our expectations are higher than a rangers. As the crap makes it's way to the water, the bureaucratic gears maybe move one cog. Maybe if a spider had been harmed. Ridiculous! I want an answer as well. I did call btw and was given the we can't say line.

More concerned about the clean-up than a court date. Has it been cleaned up?

As I previously posted, it was not cleaned up as of 8/17. Possibly someone on the lake can do a drive-by and see if the signs are still up around the beach........

I had it marked as 37' 4'54.80 north and 111' 19'34.94 west. is that correct? if not ive been staying away just incase

Roscoelab, per google earth, the actual spot is about 430 feet south of the coordinates you provided. I have it at 37'04'51.50N 111'19'38.39W so same general beach area.

Don't we all know nothing will be done? NPS is nothing but bureaucrats that do nothing all day and still get paid exorbitant taxpayer funded salaries! If you find a government employee that actually does anything positive, please let me know! I have not been able to find any! That person will probably be fired for actually doing something.

Surely you're being a bit harsh with your treatment of NPS and other government employees? In the past year down on the lake I've had positive interactions with a couple of the young guides/rangers staffing Rainbow Bridge and with the young, ranger-in-training who investigated when my boat was struck by another boat. I also appreciated the pair of rangers who arrested a serious trouble maker at Antelope Point.

I'm sure I'm not alone, when I say I am getting REALLY tired of your rants, Dale! When is the last time you contributed anything around here, besides a bunch of belly aching? WAYNE does positive stuff, every single day, that all of us here, and thousands of others benefit from. He's got a LIFETIME of it.

You crossed the line.....as usual

So can you tell me what has been done to clean up this mess?? Apparently not! Because nothing has been done!! NPS should have had people in the scene the day it was reported!

Yes, there are a lot of good people working for NPS, but the bureaucrats that run the agency are the problem.

Is being a teacher a government employee that does something positive? I think I do a lot of positive every day. And I promise you I work extremely hard. In fact, I'm only employed at .8 full time, but I still show up and work the exact same hours that all other teachers work. Why would I do that you might ask???? Because there is so much work to get done, that I am unable to get it all done within my .8 contracted day (no complaints, that's just the way it is for most teachers).

I appreciate your opinion and respect your right to express it. I'm even open to considering the merits of your opinion. However, there isn't much constructive in what you've written and instead it reads like a rant. Does that help improve anything?

Obviously, I don't know you. But I do want you to know I respect you as a fellow human who shares a passion for Lake Powell. Perhaps if we looked at all of the things that we share in common as opposed to the things that differentiate us, we'd do a better job respecting each other.

Anyway.. I guarantee you, that I am a government employee who does a LOT of good each day with my students. I am fortunate to be in the position and I do not take the responsibility lightly.

P.S. They won't be firing me.

P.P.S. Your use of the exclamation point is one of my favorite components of your posts.

There are several million way underpaid employees of the U.S. government called the military. They provide great service. Teachers do work very hard and because of unions, there are many freeloaders while others are morally motivated to do the job right because they want to help people learn. Police and fire and rescue are not paid nearly enough for their services. Senators, Mayors, Representatives, city councils, politicians of any stripe are overpaid and most would not be able to maintain a job in the civil sector with similar performance. Forest service, NPS, I guarantee those folks aren't making anything near "big money." IS the government, federal, state and local loaded with freeloading do-nothings? You bet, but there are also many who work hard for their money and carrying the freeloader along because the unions won't let the losers be easily fired. I worked on many government contracts where government oversight "monitors" were one to one with each of my employees working on the contract. DC is certainly a swamp in many ways, but the majority of people in public service with whom I've had dealings are good moral hard working folks.

I think there should be more communication...on par with the quagga mussel warnings. This would stop some of the ignorance and shovel carriers.

I am guilty. But no more after reading Here only.... thus my suggestion.

I will go ahead and postulate more than 50% of beach camping EASILY has hole diggers.

My understanding is that the perps were given the option to pay a big fine (many thousands of dollars) OR clean-up the beach themselves, under the supervision of NPS personnel.

As mentioned a few pages ago on this thread, the family cleaned the beach late last year and the case was closed. I'm not aware how they exactly cleaned it. And I am not aware of any fines or any other actions taken against them.

As others stated, its very frustrating that NPS actively patrols beach camps for this type of problem, but when one this large was found/reported, no significant (in my opinion) action was taken.

My cynical self thinks that this happens every day with at least 80% of this same level of beach contamination. I wonder if the Park Service is thinking along those lines also, and doesn't aggressively hunt down the offenders.
