Yamaha is "inspect" every 100 hours, and replace at 300. The "inspect" clause is important, as you know you can burn up your impeller and melt the plastic impeller housing quickly if run dry (like running on the earmuffs and they slip off .). Also for you folks in the desert, I'd imagine storing the boat on the trailer dries them out quicker. And as mentioned if you drop it to inspect, just go ahead and replace it. Have on hand a complete water pump repair kit and plastic housing when you do the job, there is a dozen or so seals and parts in there, nothing worse than having to wait a week on parts with your lower unit disassembled...Polling the WW group on replacing impellers. 300hrs seems to be the general consensus. Our boat is strictly fresh water.
