Nothing to do with fishing or Powell so this post may not belong on this site - mead at all time low.

Folks - there was a recent comment about this site being fishing only.

Understand what that means if you want to use it to move your agenda.

In the olden days it meant it was fishing based - a basecamp to talk about fishing at Powell but also a warm place to talk about other Powell things like weather, gas prices, camping, life, etc… some members even posted stories that had zero point zero to do with fishing or Powell, and that were some of the best post ever.

Moving forward, with a restructure of only fishing, it means you move into an area on non-relevance as others have left this site to go to other sites that were created to expand the digital presence with broader information and less censorship like Powellheaz.com, lakepowellwaterdata.com, houseboating lake powell on Facebook, desert rat on YouTube, lake Powell on Reddit, even glen canyon institute and Eric Hanson and lake Powell chronicles, and KSL. But across all those platforms WW has more views than any of them.

Some folks, like me, who have been a member on this site for over 20 years still find room in my life to swing by and check in, and sometimes even add a post or two, all having nothing to do with fishing, but all certainly able to spike your curiosity and expand your knowledge.

WW was the first non commercial Powell related site to appear in a digital format, it was WAY out in front and as a result became the #1 source for so much information to people all over the world who love Powell. My first sign in was on the original BBS, and then I followed the group to the second BBS and then to the first real web site and then to the next one that got hacked and then to this one.

A comment of fishing only is limiting and kinda ignorant and selfish and self-fulfilling.

If you want to wave your little FISHING ONLY flag then just stop reading or delete this post - if you want to engage in serious conversations beyond fishing then keep reading.

Folks - it is a sad day - lake mead just hit the lowest point since filling and just dropped below 2022 levels. This is not good…

Just for the record, I don't fish, and I don't own a boat. In the big picture, I don't even care much about fishing, except to the extent that I've learned a lot about it on this forum, and re-affirmed that it's a skill and mindset I'll never have. But that's not why I contribute to this site. I think WW is a fabulous forum for discussing all issues relevant to Lake Powell, easily the best and most respectful online discourse about Lake Powell and issues related to its existence, including water supply, power generation, history, recreation, flood control, and its future, all of which fall under the greater "Colorado River watershed" topic. And by that measure, Lake Mead is certainly a key part of that discussion, in my opinion.

So let the discussion begin.

I'm not a moderator, but I think the moderators here do a fantastic (and thankless) job trying to keep to the mission of the site, while still allowing for a broader discussion that remains relevant, helpful, respectful, and educational. That's a fine line to walk, but Bart does a great job of it.

I've often wondered why all topics that impact our lake aren't open for rational, 'no personal attacks' discussion. The photos of the dangerous cables at the Rainbow Bridge sign and the missing/lost buoys were very useful, promoted safety, and I'd bet they were shared with folks not even on WW. That seemed helpful.

Like you, JFR, I appreciate Bart and wouldn't want his job...esp having to deal with folks with my (non)-sense of humor.....😜

but may I ask why the two threads regarding NPS were closed down?

It's terrible but at least it's still 90 feet above where it needs to be before it can't generate electricity. Where Lake Powell is at 31 feet and going down fast.

That can't possibly be true. Desert Rat Explorations alone averages about 100,000 views per video.

Back in my college days we used to love Temple Bar, South Cove and Sandy Point. That part of the lake was a lot like mid-lake Powell back in the day.

Are they still accessible or high and dry?
Lake Mead basically goes up to Sandy Point and stops. Temple Bar is open, but with a limited launch ramp. South Cove is still around, but you need to be alert for obstructions.

IMO the biggest question for the future is going to be do we fit the water use from the Colorado River to what is available and happening vs. what the laws and Compact have down?

All the money and time wasted in courts will not alter reality of what is happening so to me the sooner we adjust the system to what is available the sooner we get the reservoirs back into some meaningful balance with a chance to increase their levels.

The SCOTUS, the President, the Govenors of the states, etc can all attempt to deny reality or impose something that isn't reflective of what is actually available, but we've already seen where that approach ends up. Instead putting money into science and measuring things and other useful research and also money into conservation and redoing the infrastructure to put more water underground, recycling and cleaning up messes (to avoid polluting water to begin with is a good idea too) will go a lot further in terms of bangs for the buck. Where do you want your taxes to go? More lawyer bills and wasting time or actual useful results?
