North or south?

Headed down this Sunday for four days of fishing. Trying to decide whether we go north or south to find some good fishing areas. Got one group with us that are first timers to Powell and we want to get them hooked ( no pun intended). We had great luck two years ago around the Rincon area. Did pretty well last year going north towards to good hope. We are looking for small mouth and large mouth. Any suggestions from those of you have been down lately?

I am sure the smallmouth are on fire over the length of Lake Powell. The journey through the Maytag straits after launching at Wahweap is an hour of torture. I suggest launching at Bullfrog or Halls and then deciding where to go. You can catch stripers at the mouth of Lake Canyon on bait. Bass are available in all the rocky coves. (Green plastic baits) You will find them! Walleye have started hitting well too. Lots of choices. Rincon to Escalante may be a really good trip.

Thanks for the response Wayne. We are launching bullfrog on Sunday afternoon and camping on the shoreline somewhere until Friday if the fishing holds solid. Looking forward to another successful annual trip to Powell. We have been do the “man trip” for the past 12 years and have had only one slow year on the San Juan (heavy runoff year with tons of debris).

You read our minds, heading to that area this afternoon. We've never fished south of Halls Crossing, but thought we'd give it a try since Farley and White aren't an option this spring(hard to fish 5 people from an 8ft pedalboat). As the water warms up we'll start fishing toward the north.
