How long till the shining new ramp is high and dry or will it work for another year… perhaps the ramps real purpose is to evacuate the houseboats which could have been done at a much lower cost if started earlier
This is being reconstructed to allow access for low water conditions that we'll be facing in the future. They will continue to extend the ramp as the water recedes and will provide a more permanent solution. So bring your boat and have a good time.

Are you saying 'evacuate the houseboats' because there's some level where there's not enough water for the the marina?
 
From the pictures it looks like they are just putting in the concrete to the water's edge, so they will need some kind of plates / gravel / other temporary solution for the last few feet until the water level starts going up again. The slope where the ramp is being built continues down well below the minimum power pool of 3,490' elevation, but the reservoir would just be the channel of Wahweap Creek about to the current location of the Wahweap Marina at 3,370' elevation (dead pool). The NPS said that it would be extendable to 3,450' elevation.

I wish there were a more descriptively accurate term than "dead pool." I know what it means and how it's used, but at Lake Powell dead pool is more of a concept than a reality - even when the elevation hits 3370. To truly be a dead pool, you would have to stop all of the inflows as well as the outflows. Instead, Lake Powell will turn into one of thousands of lakes, natural and man-made, that have a fixed-height impoundment leaving the lake at a stable level where inflows match outflows exactly. Am I missing something?
 
I believe they will follow the water down. Initially with temp plates followed by concrete. Dropping level is good for permanent fix. I hope

The lake would be functioning like any natural (non-impounded) body of water, and would have a "residence time" of less than a year, meaning pretty good flow through. It would not be anything like the terminal lakes such as the Salton Sea or Great Salt Lake.

By the way, the GCNRA superintendent was misusing the term in his interview. He really meant minimum power pool.
 
I'll 'dredge' to get an answer for half that million......and even that's negotiable........;)

But seriously.....the NPS must have some idea where some of the docks might not be viable.
The slips at Halls Crossing and Antelope Point should be fine all of the way down to "minimum reserve pool" but it might be interesting to get to the ones at Antelope Point. The Wahweap Basin would be mudflats around 3,400', and the Park Service would probably start getting nervous about stranded houseboats around 3,425' elevation.
 
Did I miss something? I thought there was an asphalt ramp there at one time that was going to be used. When we were there in early August, I thought I saw asphalt at the water edge as they were grading.
 
Great pics!! Anyone heard when the Stateline ramp will be completed? We are thinking of being there mid week after Labor Day. I'd rather park closer to the ramp than a mile walk away if possible. :)

I believe the minimum power pool is a different (higher) measurement. It signifies the level below which there is not enough head (pressure) to spin the turbines. Dead pool (as it has been used here and in the press) is the level at which the water doesn't reach the intakes/bypasses and can therefore no longer exit the reservoir - though some also use it to signify the loss of power generation.

I don't claim any special knowledge about these things. Just reporting my observations on how these terms have been used recently.
