new AIS requirements in Utah

I don’t disagree, but so far, Utah lakes have so far been spared because of what effort has taken place. If the program wasn’t working, we’d see (knock on wood) widespread contamination. I also wonder if the contaminated boats had the orange or blue seal.

Honestly, I am not a fan of the way boats are checked because they do a sloppy job, but the decontamination has been good in Utah county. I recently had my bass boat decontaminated and it was very well done.

I also think that the orange seal is not a guarantee of no mussels, but even then, the boat still needs to be decontaminated and a blue seal attached.
I was going to comment on the seal issue. Like you said, every boat gets a seal. Perhaps CO doesn't understand the difference between the two.

I don't understand why evey boat isn't marked contaminated and you go to your home state and they inspect and deal with you how they want... the boat is dirty leaving Powell regardless if they find anything... the big deal is they need to stop being lazy and make it easy to get the boat decontamination cleaned and inspected
How is the boat ‘dirty regardless’ if it is decontaminated properly before leaving Powell?

This makes to much sense, that’s why they aren’t doing it lol

Veligers only
No adults
Not 100% sure, but I think all positives were based on Environmental DNA, not live Veligers. There have been several positives in Montana, and Colorado, that turned out to not actually contain live mussels. They just detected EDNA coming off of boats that have been at Powell or other infected lakes. That is one reason why they don’t want you carrying around pieces of shells on your boat…..

When I was talking to the head of the CO program, the only thing I was requesting was that they would honor the Utah seal at the Colorado inspection station at the border on I70. That would only mean that they would acknowledge that my sea strainer was clean and ballast tanks run until they don’t pump water.

Colorado won’t even do that. They are requiring boats be uncovered, sea strainer shown and ballast pumps run. I’m also told they are supposed to inspect the interior of the boats for any mussels. I’m not sure how that’s going to work the way many people have to transport gear in their boat for a long Powell trip.

My comment was more in reference to your statement about Colorado finding mussels on boats that were sealed, which is why they don't trust the Utah seals. I can get inspected but not decontaminated and get a seal. Of course, even without the decon, they require me to present my strainer and run ballast pumps/engine. The whole process is just such a pain. I really feel for you in Colorado having to deal with it all over again.

I really think the whole thing is a mess. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t require decontamination if a boat has mussels? While at the same time I’d be very upset if I had to wait at Powell for any period of time to be decontaminated only to have to go home and do it all over again.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it isn’t what’s being done right now (by either CO or UT - I could tell you stories of the huge holes in the CO system as well).

We are spending millions of $ on a battle that will be difficult to win (and I’m not sure what the definition of win even is here).

Keeping CO waters clean is winning.
I may be slightly solaced from the endless chop picturing that checkpoint.
Another reason Halls rocks.....
