In 2009 this project was approved by Congress, and must be complete by 2025. It pulls most of its water from the San Juan River near Shiprock, NM. We saw some of the 48" line being laid along the Hwy 491 corridor. From the BOR website, "The Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project is designed to provide a long-term sustainable water supply to meet the future population needs of approximately 250,000 people in these communities by the year 2040 through the annual delivery of 37,764 acre-feet of water from the San Juan Basin." I'm not sure how many acre-feet the San Juan provides to Powell annually, but this will reduce that quantity.
