Mussel Dead Zone

Last week on the lake I noticed that there is a 3-4' gray area between mussel growth. Some sort of dead zone where the mussels have not grown. What is the explanation for the time period the mussel did not grow?

Last week on the lake I noticed that there is a 3-4' gray area between mussel growth. Some sort of dead zone where the mussels have not grown. What is the explanation for the time period the mussel did not grow?

Low tide high tide? Only 4' +- rise from run off this year.

I thought about that, but there are mussels above and mussels below that area. This would mean that if there are mussels above, the water level must have been high enough to cover the line.
