Let's hear your favorite way to catch Stripers in the winter

Hey buddy, I can’t wait to get back down there sometime. I promise my dad next year. I’ll pull the boat back and we will go jig up some stripers. He is 88 years old so I need to get it done. I had a friend go about a month ago and they caught well over 250 stripers just jigging in bullfrog bay. They also caught one 12 pound catfish on a cast master. I got my captains license now, so we may bring the boat back next winter and maybe make some trips out of bullfrog if possible. Good hearing from you!

My fishing buddy was 92 when he passed last year, we fished til he was 91. I sure missed him this year. Did you get your capt license to guide?

I did. I can retire in four years, so I figured that would be a good way to supplement my retirement. I do it anyway, so I just don’t charge as much. It was a difficult while working at the same time. A lot of useless information. I fish out of Fort Bragg California now and the fishing is phenomenal. We are starting to get into the really large tuna.

Send me you info, I am needing to learn about some offshore stuff. Do you shoot any pigs at Bragg?

My favorite way for winter stripers is to find the schools or bait balls in the bays. Then run down riggers just above the schools or the bottom of the bait balls with a 4 in yo zuri. Even cleaning while you go 25-30 fish per day is all that you really want to clean when the temps are in the low 30’s.

I have never fished Powell in the summer.

No pigs on the coast however they are inland but it’s all private property. We are just getting started, so not a lot of info to send. My Facebook page probably has more than anything on it.

Wishing I were at Powell, but since I'm not let's talk about it. I like to throw Walleye assassin's, and that is just about all I do. But with that said, spooning is probably the quickest way to put them in the boat in 22 ft or less, especially with braided line ' HORSE THEM' in the boat. But what I like about casting assassin's, is covering more ground then spooning. But I am curious how others that have fished them for years like to do it all so. Or the guys throwing assassins or swim baits, how do you like to fish them, there are a lot of different ways.

So there are many spooning responses here and I love spot locking a school and spooning as well but I find that to be better in the fall months into November. Winter I find the stripers in shallower waters and throw Lucky Craft LV500's, this is my absolute favorite way period to fish Powell. Tossing 500's and ripping lips with my baitcaster is such a blast !
