Lake Genius App - worth the $19.99

I strongly recommend the Lake Genius app. It does a very good job of highlighting the current shoreline and any hazards at current levels. If you want some extra caution you can manually set the level of the lake to any level you want, say 5 feet lower than actual. As the lake is at historic lows and we are in uncharted territory the hazards Lake Genius identified in the areas we were navigating was a big relief.

I have 2 wishes. First that it would clearly show the main channel of all 3 rivers- this Iis something that Navionics gets right. Second that you could filter crowd sourced input by type. When we are navigating I really only care about potential hazards, not sight seeing options

Have you found any un marked shallow areas with it? We switched from Navionincs to LakeMaster after finding several hazard spots not shown at any elevation on Navionincs. So far so good with LakeMaster but always open to a back up plan.

We have t tried lake master, but definitely found some “prop eaters” that weren’t marked on Navionics. My understanding is you can’t set the Navionics lake level offset low enough to reflect current levels, but I don’t know that for a fact. We have Navionics on our Lowrance fish finders, but we are unable to set lake levels on those units.

We are using a combo of the 2 right now

The base elevation on Navionics for Lake Powell is 3606. You can adjust from that based upon the lake current elevation. At an elevation of 3526, the adjustment would be a -80. When you make that adjustment you get pretty good contours and current shore conditions, but not as detailed as Lake Genius, which I just reviewed tonight for the first time.

I have used both Lake Genius and the Lake Master chip for over five years. I have navigated from Wahweap to Trachyte / White Canyon. Including the San Juan and Escalante as far as the water depth would allow. I personally feel that Lake Master is better overall. More features and color choices to highlight low water. Both these apps can save you a prop and lots of aggravation. Neither of these apps are accurate near the "head of navigation" or navigable ends of the Colorado, San Juan or Escalante Rivers or other places that have a lot of direct drainage and therefore silting. In canyons with a lot of rock walls and not much of a slow moving drainage I am sometimes amazed at how accurate they are. I have not used Navionics and do not have any direct experience with that unit. In my opinion any of the nav apps that you can adjust the lake level can save your day. It is my guess that they are all using the same elevation contours from the last time the lake was surveyed.
