July at Lone Rock beach

Dad 25, I spent a couple trips on Lone Rock beach early on my Lake Powell trips. The last one was the last one, all night partiers, atv/utv riders until midnight, wall to wall people. If someone else in your party has a boat it would be wise to look somewhere else..... definitely worth the effort...

Has anyone taken NP230 and 231 to Warm Creek? NP230 picks up at Big Water Utah. County Road at Big Water also ties into NP230. NP230 goes to the Wiregrass Canyon Trailhead then ties into 231 which goes to Warm Creek. Looks like NP230 eventually goes to Gunsite.
A few years ago I was at Lone Rock and took the Porta Bote through the cut to Warm Creek. Caught quite a few bass there. It was a zoo so we stopped going.

Don't be too sure about the cut
As much as I want you to be right, I'm highly skeptical. The entire upper Colorado basin is at around 73% of average. If this storm takes us to 100% that is still just average and probably not enough to overcome the current deficit. I'm a realist not a pessimist and my prayers are being lifted up every day as my community is dependent on rain for dryland farming.

I'm going to have to agree, I live in Grand Junction and the soil has been sucking up the moisture like you wouldn't believe. I was riding my side by side, shed hunting eastern Utah this last weekend and it was the dustiest I think I have ever seen for this time of year at 6000'...

JTJ, We used that route quite a bit last year. I never drove the route myself but my son and his friends did several times and met us in the boat. The route in is pretty care free and I believe the only time you have to be careful is if there has been rain or water in the wash. There are a few deep sand spots near the lake but they are evident and fine for most 4x4's, or can be driven around. We also drove all the way around the back side of Castle Rock last year into Wahweap Bay, to the first small bay just behind CR. It appears that this may have been the way in for the equipment when they deepened the Cut. Our son's friend had an Excursion with a flatbed trailer in there without any issues.

I believe the other extensions of the road dead end on the mesa tops and you can't get to the water. The Warm Creek extension goes right to the waterline.

Here's essentially where we went last year. We camped in the two red X marks in the tighter view picture. My son said the route in was fine and really any 4x4 can do it. They turned around a few times in the blue circle zone due to sand but did find a way down to the beach. As I mentioned we also took a Razor on a two track trail all the way over behind Castle Rock to the X in the larger view picture. My son thinks a good 4x4 should be able to get through on this trail. We passed at least one Subaru camping down on the beach for this trek.

That is some good information. My Chevy Tracker could probably make it. I would still have to get the boat permit.

Go For It! Everyone has a lone rock story and you should have one too. Mid July will be like being in the middle of a Mad Max set, lots of trucks and rigs crawling around the sand hills making noise, dogs barking, stuck RV’s in the sand, but that is nothing compared to the wind storms and flying sand and flying tents and tarps. Secure everything, wear a life vest. Plenty of space to park your boat at waters edge. Enjoy.

We did enjoy lone rock during the covid lockdown and have pictures of just my dog on the entire beach - nothing else from edge to edge - awesome. For that fact the entire lack was awesome during spring of last year, warm weather and literally zero crowds, will probably never happen again, it was even more deserted than the lockdown due to no funding a few years ago.

Lone Rock is one of the few places you can camp on the beach and have your boat in the water. As bad as it has gotten if I were taking an RV I would camp there again and take food and a groover with me on the boat so I could stay out all day. Run into town in the evening to get gas and ice for the boat. You might get lucky and have good people around you. If you can, secure your spot on a Monday or Tuesday after a bunch have left. Watch out for firepits and holes kids have dug. Not a good idea to try and park at night. Carry a big magnet to pick up nails around your camp site. I have seen idiots burn pallets. Hard on tires and feet. Get a transfer pump to get gas from cans into the boat. Pumps are about $50 on Amazon. An old washing machine tub makes a good fire pit. If you need coolers check Walmart. They do have some good ones not just junk. Amazon does not always have the best prices.
Walmart also has some inexpensive sit on top kayaks that look decent for playing. Keeps kids entertained. Sit on tops are safer than sit ins and self bailing.
