In the market for a new fishfinder

The unit does come with a base map, however it has less detail for Powell, and doesn't allow you to use the lake level offset and shallow water highlighting features. The screenshots you may have seen with the blues, greens and reds are from the Lakemaster card.

I have a Lowrance HDS 7 Gen 3 and have it connected to my Motorguide trolling motor. I really like the control that I have with the trolling motor.

Guys, I would like a great moving map display with great graphics and pretty pictures. Don't care one bit about fish finders, and wouldn't hook it up if it came with one. Any ideas what model that would be?

For heck’s sake don’t blow hundreds if all you need are maps! Your iPhone, iPad, or Android can use the built in GPS (on or off grid) and combined with Navionics+ app provide very detailed full-featured navigation capability including saved tracks, dropped pins and wave points, changing lake-level, the whole Nine Yards!

So, I could use the fancy Ipad mini that I got for buying a new Honda, and make that work? Actually, I have an old Ipad 2 16 gig that would love a job and the sense of self-worth that comes from lighting up more often. Thanks for the tip.

These are screen shots of the iPad App. It can be used even when the phone is off grid and off network because the GPS modules still work via satellite RF. F9D5A6F7-62DD-4400-892A-5204AE1833F3.png

Yes. The iPad mini would be ideal because it has the iris display and longer battery life, although I’d recommend simply buying a car mount for it and plug it into a cigarette to lightning adapter so it can run indefinitely. You won’t be disappointed.

It tracks speed, max speed, avg speed, distance, waypoints, saves your entire path for the day and let’s you “play” your path back later to show others where you went. It also allows marking hot spots, etc and sharing location data, tracks, waypoints and even pictures through the app with others. Preplanning a route is also easy using the app, you figure out where you want to go, drop pins, and it will later guide you in order to each spot. It’s really quite amazing and since it’s on your device not the boat, you can carry it around with you, use on other boats, etc.

If your using a combo unit and only using map chip you are missing allot of detail. The new units have automapping capacity that will generate a 1 ft detail map, this overlays on your map chip but gets you great detail of the honey holes.

Lake master has a big flaw at Red Canyon. If you were running and only watching the map you would smack right into a reef that is 20-40’ out of the water. The map says you are in 120’ of water. This is the only bad flaw I’ve seen with it but seems the further north you go it has some places that are a bit off. From halls to ghb seems to be pretty spot on. Lake master has way better mapping hd overlay crap on the Wahweap end. The main channel is very accurate though.

I have the Navionics app for my iPhone and it does work, just a PITA with the little screen and the fact I have a screen saver on it. Someone mentioned ipad mini. I have one (4 years old) and it does not have GPS in it. Maybe things have changed, but back then the only ipads with GPS were the ones that also had cellular capability.

Someone mentioned they did get Navionics to work on a Lowrance with offset. Is this something new or on newer units?

I have noticed on tight canyons my hummingbird will be off due to it not picking up all the satellites, is it possible that is happening?

You’re right! Only iPads with Cellular have GPS :(

In the iPhone you can set the app so it doesn’t allow the phone to sleep when it’s providing GPS. That parts easy.

No it’s a complete miss. I spent alot of time there and it’s consistently incorrect

I just replaced my old hummingbird with a garmin , 5" chirp DV. I have only had it out once so haven't really dialed it in yet. Non the less I really like the color and screen clarity. What an advancement, compared to my old black&white model, also it seems to be a lot more user friendly . The GPSstore.com, has the best price out there and free shipping too.
