I usually try to leave Memorial Weekend to the crowds, but things have delayed a Spring trip, and I decided I couldn’t wait any longer. Turns out, the crazy weather kept the crowds away. We timed the weather just right and had a great trip. Left at 2 PM on Thursday from Colorado and must have just missed a hail storm on I-70 near Thompson- 3 cars off the road including one on its side, lots of police and stopped vehicles and ice/hail on the ground. Otherwise, rain until just past Hanksville, then clearing skies at Powell. Friday the water from Bullfrog to Lake Canyon was 62 degrees with 1foot visibility. Caught fish every place we stopped, LMB on Ned rig (released), striper on silver senco, SMB on white curl tail grub, walleye on lipless crankbait and bottom bouncer. Fished cracks and rocks. Abbie tried her a spearfishing skills, but visibility was too poor. We did see juvenile stripers slurping amongst the trees in the first righthand fork of Lake Canyon. I threw anchovies at them, but they weren’t interested. Couldn’t catch them with spoons, anchovies or 3inch white grubs.
Saturday, the water cleared and temperature went up to 65-66. Better for diving so Abbie got 2 carp and passed up many more, not being sure what we were going to do with them, but knowing “you cook what you kill”. Juvenile stripers were being caught at the mouth of Lake Canyon. Headed back Sunday and the wind hit at noon in Hanksville.
Man, those carp don’t have much meat on them for their size. Looking up recipes.C6CD5849-3586-4A48-9AA8-DEDEA6739D3E.jpeg730B6948-5606-46EF-BFA9-DE6F6E8EB407.jpeg493A7EA0-EC48-41E3-8305-36DE972A67B2.jpeg4C78340D-010A-4DF8-8697-747AE4FFD50F.jpeg244D67ED-8BE3-4B87-8E9F-D31DEEDC66B9.jpeg
