I'm curious, do the more mature stripers eat the smaller younglings of their own species? I would seem like maybe not (or at least not much) and that's one reason we get so many? 🤷‍♂️
 
Texas is not genetically altering the fish.They are just breeding fish known to grow to exceptional size together.How can that be bad. Think of it in reverse.If they found some bass that were 20 years old and 12 inches long.You certainly wouldn't want them to be breeding them . This is the opposite.
 
Some of the comments are pretty funny considering maybe 15? Years ago we were all sitting around a campfire at a south lake rendezvous with the dire news from Wayne that we now had mussels. There were projections of very diminished amounts of stripers and maybe eradication, and now we have too many….again…. It seems like Mother Nature does what she wants and adaptability is innate. Just sayin. :)
 
Well, that really wasn't what I was referring to. Yes, i agree with your comment. I was thinking since they genetically altered them to grow big, all the sudden the largest bass record will be broken, but it's not apples to apples. The largest bass was a natural one.
I think it as these high fence deer farms that feed all the proteins and minerals to promote antler growth. Next thing you know, world record deer harvests are recorded.
Oh heck yes I would want to fish there and pull on huge fish, but many oh man, I hate altering mother nature!!!
I hate altered nature as well….but you have to admit that nothing about “Lake Powell” (reservoir) is actually natural. ….and I would love to feel what one of those feels like on the end of the line. 😁

I've had a couple discussions with Wayne about Stripers, their introduction into Powell and lots about their breeding, schooling and temperature tolerances. I also did a week on the fall gill netting program as a volunteer---fished several days with him. You are correct that they did not know if the stripers could reproduce in clear waters of Powell--thinking it unlikely. In the costal rivers where ocean stripers spawn the stream bottoms are mostly silt and mud. Stripers have evolved to dispense large quantities of eggs because after fertilization most eggs sink in the murky bottoms and die. Striper eggs require high amounts of oxygen to germinate. What has happened at Powell is the eggs often lay on rocky or hard bottoms and do not sink to their demise. But the genetics of the spawning females still has them produce massive numbers of eggs. Since the waters of our lake are clear and has ample O2, the survival rate is very high resulting on too may stripers. That leads to the "feast and famine" cycles we have on our beautiful lake. Wayne, did it get it mostly right?

@TR. How is it possible, that I remember THAT campfire conversation 15 years ago, better than conversations 15 days ago!!?? :ROFLMAO:
