Houseboat Timeshare Insurance Cancelled

And we seem to be on a direct path for NPS as they come and go from the Halls NPS office. I think they passed on average about 6x a day when we moved in May

I think you need to give the slips a chance. Honestly, we will never be anywhere but the slips again. Probably half the trips we take, the houseboat doesn't leave the slip. And only one year did we get hassled about swimming (yes I know the electrical hazard risk).

I am going to suggest that, you don't know or understand the risk, if you are still swimming at the docks.

No, I do know and understand them. Very few people are killed each year doing it. And while I haven't run the numbers, I would be willing to bet that your odds of dying in a car accident on the drive to the lake are much higher than your odds of being electrocuted swimming in the slips.

Life is full of risks. I know many people are more risk averse than I am.

Yes, but we’re talking about the “Bride”, I think she was “Born to Swim”. Sq
I guess if swimming at the houseboat is your main thing, maybe the slips aren't for you.

But I like being able to roll in late, and just leave things in the truck and walk out to the houseboat.

And I like the social aspect of meeting your neighbors.

And I like the fact that I don't have to worry about my personal boat being beaten against the side of the houseboat when big waves come by, or you are in the inevitable wind storm.

And I like the fact that you have 24/7 electricity, and the houseboat can be a cool 72* when you come back from a day on the lake and it is still 105* outside.

And how easy it is to either cart or have Executive Services put your gear in a trailer and drive it to the boat.

And the fact that if it does rain at night (or during the day) that you can usually still sleep up top (if that is what you want), and not get wet.

Without a doubt, there are some tradeoffs. But I can say that I really enjoy the trips when we stay in the slip.

Ok we just found out that our insurance is dropping us as well. 97 Somerset 75x16 aluminum mono haul 8 shares.

I just talked to Warner Gleave. Apparently the company that did our insurance, American Reliable Insurance, no longer is doing multiowner water craft. So they say there is only one company that now does it, Markel. Our rate for July 2020 to 2021 went from $1811 to $4819!
Wow that’s a heck of increase.

Prime Insurance came back to us, wanted $30K for the year o_O We are back working with Markel and hope to find out today if we have insurance and see what happens..

JrB - That is disappointing at it appeared there was another avenue for insurance -- Without prying to much -- what year and length is your houseboat as I assume that the insurance companies premium of 30K is based on the value of your boat and maybe the number of owners - I hope you find a reasonable balance with Markel

Can’t say many good things about insurance companies - a necessary evil to be sure - but positive interactions with them over the years have been few and far between.

We don't need to drive this off topic. The numbers are actually MUCH higher then you think, and that includes Lake Powell. However speaking of insurance, it would be costly to fix an old dock but a requirement on anything new. So it's a numbers game with Aramark and their insurance... do you know what the last payout was for this issue.

Well the saga continues, Markel denied us insurance after we did everything they asked and even secured a slip (as that was latest requirement). Really sounding like insurance companies are not interested in multi-owner houseboats. So what we have is older rental, 1998 60' Sumerset which is an aluminum hall with 18 owners. Latest survey was May of this year and everything is solid and well maintained (this is not some trashed boat ready to sink LOL).

We are onto another lead via Evolution Insurance which is out of Utah and I believe directly write policies to Prime Insurance. We worked a different angle to get the $30K quote and working with Evolution looks to be much cheaper and they seem interested in writing us a policy. Boat is out of the water right now waiting for underwriter review and hopefully we secure policy to get back in the water.

Houseboating could be limited if houseboat owners are not able to secure insurance policies (crazy times indeed in all areas right now).

Thanks all for continued discussions and ideas...

With 18 owners could you use a bond? Each owner would be a 1/18 responsible of the minimum req limits of coverage by the park. Any accident between private parties would be the responsible owners fault I would think?? The main part is the Federal Park portion to cover up to XXX amount of damage to, or remove, salvage boat. This was a random thought tear it up. I know some people carry bonds for car insurance to meet the 100/300 policy or the minimum the state requires.

Did you end up getting it? We are scrambling..

We hope to find out tomorrow, I spoke directly to underwriter today and gave them everything they asked and answered all remaining questions. The remaining houseboat insurers all seem very busy and the underwriting unfortunately takes time and then you get into back and forth with questions and documents and then you get back inline with getting time back with underwriting.

Any updates? Thanks!

Sorry has been such a joy ride trying to secure insurance. So long story short we were able to secure insurance through Prime, but is 2.5x higher then what we had with American Reliable. For our policy it did not matter if we had buoy or slip (previously we were finding some insurance would require slip). We are now back up and operational..
