If it is really a deal breaker, have a buy/sell arrangement set up ahead of time, if he can't go, he sells the share to you, and you go have fun. Next time when he wants to go and you can't, he buys your share. Obviously, there are some hoops to jump through, but it can be done.

I will show my old age here….,
But we are not talking about getting a free order of French fries in a “work around”…..
The rules of: number of captains, skill of the captains, no rentals, etc…. Is to define the maximum amount of risk the ownership group, insurance company, concessionaire, is willing to accept with their investment/Coverage/services.
If I had a partner in the group doing such a thing, they would be terminated from the group on the spot.
It puts all the owners at risk for someone else’s problem.
When the boat hits a whale and the insurance provider as not been notified of the switch.
A kid falls off the boat…… they will come after every owner in the group.
It’s not a big deal……until it is.

yeah, I agree with this. That is not my intention. Last year I almost had an emergency that made me miss the trip so I'm just nervous about it. But it is good to have the excuse that if I don't go, everyone misses the trip, so I have to go.I will show my old age here….,
