I've seen drunk aholes piss in the fresh water fill port. I would NEVER drink any water in a rental boat.

Um...
Well, huh. Anyone else feel this way?
So if I get the Gatorade water jug, where do I get blocks of ice to drop in there each day? Do you guys freeze them yourselves?
:(

I suppose anything's possible, but I've been renting houseboats forever, and never had a problem with the quality of the drinking water. That's me. I have had leaking or kinked water lines, or a broken water pump, but I have no problem with the water.

My only problem has been that the water tank on our previous boat was out on the front deck and would get warm and have the distinctive taste of LDPE tanks. We have always used 5-gallon coolers with ice blocks for drinking. One particularly hot year we had to use the water tanks for drinking as well after we ran out of cooler water and almost everyone was good with it once we got it cooled down. Those that didn't like the taste put in some crystal lite packs or Mio drops.

We use the large white cooler on the houseboat and cram it full of as many blocks of ice that will fit. Somewhere around 12-14. Also, we buy them at Safeway in Page rather than the marina. They're less than half the marina price. We use insulated bags to transport the ice to the houseboat. We keep the cooler in the houseboat and don't open it unless we need to get a block each day. They will stay mostly frozen for almost a week. :)

Cool drinking water is key.

In regards to the water... Sounds like its a first trip for your group so I would just bring the water to be safe rather than risk it. Have everyone try the tank water though while you are there and see if its up to your standards(everyone is different) Then you know for future trips. Better than buying cases of marina water at $15 a case because no one likes the tank water on the boat...

If you are running drink mixes in the cooler would frozen water bottles help with ice dilution? I usually freeze water in 1/2 gallon juice bottles for the coolers but I have never put them in drink mixes. I carried a bunch of the juice bottles filled with water from home in the RV. Never knew what kind of water we would run into. The 1/2 g bottles fit in the fridge pretty well. We kept a small freezer in the RV. Intermittent use of a Honda 2000 would keep it frozen.

Lots of great ideas & suggestions - many of which we do! When planning our meals - we make sure we have a printed menu of what is planned for the week. Helps with remembering to take different items out of freezer to thaw for dinners etc. On a 7 night trip - there is always at least 1 left overs dinner. Don't plan full meals for each day. Also push all the veggies & fruits early in the trip - helps to keep them from spoiling etc. As for drinking water, we all do refillable bottles as well as some plastic bottles, which are primarily reserved for going out on ski boats. 1/2 drank water bottles left around the HB end up in the coffee maker for the next morning.

I couldn't agree more with Tiff here. Blowing through that many disposable water bottles is nuts. I have one of those Gatorade Home Depot drink coolers. We do have a small deep freeze on the houseboat which helps, but I buy five or six of the blocks of ice specifically for this Gatorade drink cooler. I bring 3-4 five gallon water jugs to Bullfrog and then I fill it up at the picnic area there, keep them inside the houseboat in the shade. They usually still tastes fine after 5 to 6 days not much more though. It's just part of the daily routine, somebody puts a fresh block of ice in the Gatorade cooler and tops it off with big water jug. And then people usually only use one Gatorade water bottle per day and just refill it.

Everything else everybody saying about pre marinating pre freezing, dry ice that's exactly where you need to be.

Ok Powellbride, please share this french toast casserole recipe I am intrigued and hungry!!
My 2 favorite breakfast recipes are posted under the recipe forum. Grand Marnier French Toast and Chili Relleno Casserole
