Flies - Fly Repellant

When at Wahweap I overheard a conversation between the ramp agents and a boater discussing the quantity of flies. I didn't hear everything, but did hear him saying there were a lot more flies this year and I believe he said it's because of lowering water levels creating more breeding opportunities and may have also heard that the exposed mussels may be a part of it?

Anyone know what's causing the increase? It seemed there were a lot more flies than what I recall in the past all over including canyons, marina and campgrounds.

We are seeing more flies up north as well (Farmington, UT) and I think it is due to low water causing more organic material exposure in creek beds, wetlands, and unhealthy vegetation, which gives flies more success in their egg hatching.
 
Thank you all for the great input. Following up after our trip Sep 17-24.

Fly Trap - Hanging bag filled with a few cups of water. Attracts and gets flies ok, most likely more effective in numbers, multiple bags = more dead-o’s. Probably had about 2 dozen kills over the week trip…more in a bit…

Rescue TrapStick Fly Trap - Hanging multi-colored ‘sticky stick’ (Purchase from Walmart online) - Zero kills indoors, flies even landed on the non-sticky top and bottom and flew away. HOWEVER, moving this stick outdoors within a foot or two of the Fly Trap bag…wow. The odor from the bag attracted the flies and the stick filled up quickly. One word of caution, bats may be attracted to the flies and become ensnared on the sticky stick. Move indoors at dusk.

Bug-A-Salt - Pump-action fly shotgun. By far the most effective weapon of choice. Whatever stealth enemies that made it past frontline defenses were quickly dispatched with a blast of margarita salt. Plus the fun-factor.

Avon Skin-So-Soft - Fly/Mosquito repellant lotion. Brought it with us but never had a need to test it out...the above methods proved effective.

Looks like it doesn't kill spiders in the upper left !
