First Timer - Meal Recommendations

Hi All,

We have a reservation for early June out of Wahweap and I was wondering if anyone has some good ideas and recs for meal planning. We will be two families, each with two kids and total age range for kids is 7-13. We like to eat! Preparation and executions isn't a problem, but we also recognize that quick and easy, with minimal dish washing/waste will be desired.

If anyone has any good ideas on meals, food items, groceries to be sure to bring, that would be greatly appreciated. I've also heard that Walmart can deliver groceries to the marina, but haven't confirmed that. If anyone can confirm or provide a good tip for gathering food prior to the trip, that would be helpful too.

Thank you!

Depending on where you're coming from, you can decide if it's easier to buy at home or in Page at Walmart or Safeway. My general advice is that most people end up eating LESS than they thought they would - especially in hot weather. We do a light breakfast, light lunch, and full-sized dinner. And we still take food home at the end of the trip.

With kids you'll want to have snacks and drinks available 24/7. We do trail mix, jerky, yogurt, gatorade, and a few of their usual (less-healthy) favorites. They'll also gladly eat cereal most any time, but keeping a large quantity of milk refrigerated correctly can be a challenge.

Both Safeway and Walmart have offered delivery in the past, but I'm hearing they may have moved to Instacart and/or DoorDash. Maybe someone on the south end can confirm.

There are some other related discussions on this site you can probably find with the Search feature. Also, there's some great info along these lines on TripAdvisor.

This is what my group does in the summer.

Two meals a day not 3. Always dinner. Either a bigger breakfast/brunch or lunch.

Lunch meat and veggies for snacks.

Lunches and dinners need to be made outside. Either BBQ or Blackstone. Unless you’re running the generator all day for the air conditioning no one wants to be inside to cook.

We try to cook everything outside, so either barbequing or flat top. Bring a skittle as well to cook Bacon and such outside. We only plan two meals a day, Breakfast and Dinner. Lunch is a free for all, leftovers and we always bring some sandwich things. Keep it simple, if everyone likes peanut butter and jelly, roll with that.

Breakfast, usually different versions of Breakfast burritos

Dinners: Tacos, Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Burgers, we also will do something in the crockpot (run it while we are out for the day).

I'll give you our food plan but it likely won't suit you as well as it suits our crew which is comprised of mainly friends, couples and young adults. We divide the crew into food groups with one central coordinator. Each food group is slated for breakfast and dinner with dessert for one day of the trip and have the rest of the trip off. We have one day that is fish fry/ leftovers. Some of the food groups prepare and freeze their meals at home. Most of the meals are quite elaborate as it's a bit of a competition. For instance, Food Group 1 will be making an Eggs Benedict Brunch on Day 1 and an Asian dinner of hot and sour soup(frozen), egg rolls(prepped), and pork chop suey on rice with ice cream for dessert. Food group 1 will bring all the ingredients for the dinner and dessert. For the brunch the food coordinator will get the general breakfast supplies like eggs, milk, butter, etc. The food coordinator prints the menu and also gets all lunch supplies and snacks. We have 20 people so 5 food groups of 4 each, dividing up cooking, food prep and clean up.

Like @Ryan we only do 2 meals a day, breakfast and dinner, with snacks as needed between. We assign each adult a meal/day to cook. They cook and do dishes on their day. They are also responsible for meal planning, shoppping and packing. Grilling is our preference too. Hamburgers and hot dogs sound great, but they need a lot of condiments. You will want to coordinate so you don’t have 6 ketchup bottles. Buns and bread seem to go bad quickly in the heat. We also find that we eat less when it’s hot and always have too many snacks.

Frozen wings can make a great kid friendly meal. They can go onto the grill frozen. I will cook up a bag of frozen French fries to go with the wings and throw in a bag of the baby carrots. I like breakfast casseroles as opposed to eggs to order. They feed a crowd and everyone eats at the same time. Chili relleno casserole is one of our favorite. Make and freeze breakfast burritos at home, reward them on the grill. Meals with fresh produce (salads, corn on the cob, etc) I try to do early in the week, then I focus meals that can use canned goods or frozen items for the later days. Taco salad, or shrimp cocktail with a loaf of French bread (pilsbury refrigerator kind) can be plenty when is 100 out.

With kids you want to avoid repeated opening/closing of the refrigerator, they don’t cool all that well to begin with and open/close really can take a toll on the overall effectiveness. Also keep food in closed containers, nothing like open food to attract the mice
