The whole week the ice maker didn’t work, and room service literally never came and refreshed our towels or cleaned up.once.

We called and complained after we left, and never heard from anyone.

I disputed the $2200 charge on my credit card for 7 days… and Aramark never disputed my dispute.

So I guess it was awesome since it ended up free.

We won’t ever go back.

Driving into town is a bit inconvenient but having a clean room and decent service plus access to local restaurants like El Tapitio, Dahra Thai, and even the Denny’s plus clean rooms, clean towels, and ice…. Sweet sweet ice. You just can’t beat it.

FWIW, I will say that some of the issues you experienced are not unique to the Aramark hotels this year.

I travel a lot for work. Usually over 100 nights/year. I don’t think I’ve been to a hotel this year that offered housekeeping during my stay. They blame it on Covid. My guess is that daily housekeeping may be a thing of the past. I don’t change my sheets or towels home daily, so this isn’t a big issue for me, but for some it is.

And I know all the hotels have staffing problems. During a visit to Montana this year (every hotel room that week was over $350/night, and I stay in Courtyard or Fairfield type hotels), I was told that they were “full” but that really meant 1/3 of normal capacity due to staffing limitations.

Restaurants everywhere, but especially in smaller towns, are struggling with staffing issues.

Now I’m not saying that level of service is acceptable. But what you experienced certainly isn’t unique.
 
Although I was defending Aramark, haha, I will qualify here that the last time I stayed at Defiance House Lodge was 7 years ago. Sounds like their service quality has dropped along with the lake.
 
We stayed at the Defiance House family units five times in 2021 and had a couple of minor glitches, but nothing too big.

We had dinner at the lodge restaurant five times as well, and all was smooth.

And if there is water for boating next year, we will do it again.

I’m not disagreeing with the problems people have experienced, I’m only saying that there is variety in service.
 
Supply and demand. In 2017 we stayed at a hotel in Page that was over $300 per night. I checked the rates this year (early August) and it was 1/3 of that.
 
It's just really too bad that folks have had these experiences with facilities in the park. Things don't have to be perfect, but it just seems like with GCNRA being one of the premier vacation destinations, staff would be trained and would want to represent the park a little better. On the flipside though, people will still come to the lake regardless, so maybe they just don't need to care about such things.

All of this could just be signs of the times somewhat too, I suppose. Which is also sad, since it would take relatively little more effort for staff to ensure guests' stays are as epic as the park itself is.

As an aside, we did come down again this past July and stayed in Page instead of down at Wahweap. Totally different experience (for the better), even with having to drive for a few minutes each day to get down to the water. Probs won't be utilizing the campground or hotel down at Wahweap again - for the price, the place we stayed in Page was pretty incredible.

The other thing not mentioned here is that when you rent a room at Wahweap that you have to pay a lake entry fee unless you have the national park pass. This charge is not mentioned on the rental ads.

Oh yeah - I'd forgotten about that. We got the national parks pass prior to coming down for our vacation, so we were covered on that. The good news is that the annual pass works for admission to any national park, not just GCNRA though.

Yeah, we saw that too - never made any sense to me, why buy just the one for GCNRA when you can get the annual National Parks Pass for just a little more. Plus we drove up to North Rim of the Grand Canyon the week we were down there too, so it only made sense to buy the NPP.
