Keeper of San Juan Secrets
This year’s boys’ fishing trip in a word…WEATHER.
Yesterday we got absolutely hammered at the mouth of the San Juan. Instant waterfalls soon turned brown with mud and debris as the rain came down in buckets.
A couple of houseboats beached nearby and a surf boat of guys all in awe as we took it in. I found myself wondering how @PowellBride was fairing through it all…?
The storm cleared out after about 45 minutes and it was fish on. Trolling XD6 crankbaits we found healthy stripers between 14-18” and grabbed enough for a fish fry.
Today it was back to San Juan for a visit to Jack’s Arch. About 45 minute walk each way at current 3516 elevation.
Trolled up some more stripers before heading back to camp in the Escalante. We enjoyed the awesome daily air show put on by our neighbors with a yellow float plane. Absolutely amazing pilot.
Quick visit to Clear Creek and CITD. Landing is easy, can accommodate up to 3 boats.
Walk to the waterfall was 5 minutes in March, it’s now 10 minutes. But still (as always) worth it. Lots of growth filling in as well.
Tonight the rain found us again, this time right in the heart of the Escalante. Fortunately when we pulled in Friday evening I opted to stay left of the runoff channel carved by previous storms. The falls that formed above us ended up flowing right past, quite the show.
More weather forecast tonight, we’re prepared! Heading back for Gunsight or Warm Ceeek tomorrow, update to follow…
