Man oh man. My first ever trip to Lake Powell just keeps looking more & more bleak. We are planning a trip to rainbow bridge from our rented slip @ antelope marina on Tuesday. Looks like if I’m still going to attempt that I better bring my own fuel with me. I don’t have a great measure of how many miles I can go on one tank of fuel b/c we mostly tool around on smaller Nebraska lakes.

Olson, you'll be fine. We have been coming to LP every spring from Montana for 15 Years. Every trip to LP is what I call a "Vaventure". You will have adversity but that will only make the memories more vivid and make your desire to return more strong. Prepare, have fun, but keep alert and you will be fine. Enjoy!!!

Figure 3mpg. and you should be safe and leave yourself a 10% margin. So a 120mile round trip should burn about 40 gal., I would plan on 50gal. For safety. How much does your boat hold?

As a former DR manager once told me, 'If it ain't broke, it ain't the Rope'. Tough situation on the lake that day, they have a lot to deal with out there, and that was one awful windstorm. Never leave your marina without a full tank of fuel, you never know when DR is going to break - it's happened to me a few times now. Take care and be safe.

Several Septembers ago, my wife and I ended up being alone on our 65 footer. Our boat catches enough wind that it can be a handful to anchor if there's any real wind, even with experienced help, which we didn't have. So rather than risk getting blown onto the rocks, we just decided to keep the houseboat in the slip, and we did day trips exploring by Wave Runner.
On our last full day on the lake, we decided to burn off the gas. As we were coming out of the back of Last Chance, we thought we had enough fuel left to return to Antelope or run uplake to Dangling Rope for soft serve. We figured we had plenty of daylight, so off to The Rope.
As we pulled up to the fuel dock, an employee came out and explained that they couldn't sell gas because the pumps and the payment system weren't talking to each other. The pumps couldn't be powered up. No problem, we thought, there's nobody back at the boat worrying about us, and it was still only about 3:00, plenty of time for them to fix their problem with the pumps.
As we waited, other boats kept coming in, and they all ended up having to wait. We found out that one of the Bayliners waiting with us lived in the same town we were from in SoCal, only a couple of miles away. We dug out a deck of cards, and started swapping Powell stories. 2 hours became 3 hours and all of us started wondering "What happens if these pumps don't come back on?"
The manager of the store came out and apologized, and told us "You know, we're down to a skeleton crew, since most of the seasonal people have gone home. We've got empty employee housing up on the hill behind the store. We've got power and showers. If need be, you can stay overnight".
It seemed like it might have to play out that way, as the sun dropped behind the ridge. A crowd of maybe more than a dozen assorted folks were thinking it might not be so bad to be stranded at DR overnight, when the pumps suddenly came alive!
Everybody rushed to fuel up before the pumps went down again, and then we all dashed out into the fading light, like an underpowered Lake Powell Challenge.
I usually get slapped in the back of the head by my wife for going over 35 or 40 mph on the Wave Runner with her on the back, but the main channel was glass and we were losing light. I managed 45 to 50 mph in most places, and we pulled into Wakeless at Antelope just as it got dark enough for a ticket. Made it back safely, and had dinner in the restaurant.
Even when Dangling Rope is up and running, things can happen. When they do happen, make the best of it. And sometimes, even a bad situation can make a great Powell story looking back on it.

It holds 40 gallons & based on previous usage & what my gps tracker says I travel in a day 20 gallons gets me well over 60 miles & that’s with a boat full of people & throwing a tube around like a maniac. I’ll plan on strapping some gas cans onto my swim platform & I’ll throw a couple paddles in the ski locker for good measure. Thanks for the reply Meatwagon.

I keep telling myself that no matter how much it sucks, I’m going to have fun! My daughter moved to Tempe a couple years ago & thanks to the pandemic I haven’t seen her but once since 2019 so no matter what just being able to spend time with her will be good enough. Thanks Rmwinters
