Colin - if you’re considering DIYing it, I live in Pleasant Grove and would be willing to give you some guidance. PM me and we can either meet up and go over your options and how to come up with a viable solution. Keep in mind that you will need to consider some other factors, such as engine and drive condition, interior condition, etc.I'm in the Salt Lake City area. Also, I have a brother in Florida who is a boat engineer for EdgeWater Boats and has extensive experience with rebuilds. I’m sure he’d provide some guidance also. There are several ways to DIY this and each method has its pros and cons.

I keep coming back to this one. And while I think it has a TON of potential, it also scares the heck out of me.
If someone doesn’t have the knowledge/will/ability (or any other adjective) to repair the transom on their own boat that is mostly a known quantity, I can’t imagine tackling a project of a boat that has spent a lifetime neglected and sitting outside.
I hope someone grabs this one and I’d love to see the build thread. But it sure wouldn’t be me.

I definitely get where you are coming from and agree, with that said I think that this would be the perfect first project boat to work on. With as little use as it had its structurally sound without a doubt. The motor also had little use and would need small amount of tuning and cleaning. Gas tank would need drained and thoroughly cleaned as well as fuel lines replaced. IMO a great way to learn about boats. It would require a lot of buffing and waxing which is time consuming but a labor of love. if the motor takes a dump then you look at replacement which is still far cheaper and more accomplishable then the OPs project even if you hired someone to do the work. these boats with repower within the last 10 years are going for about $25k and $12-15K with original running motor. Not only that, but these boats also moved away from wood transoms and stringers around that year making it a boat that should last a very long time.
All that said the boat is gone.... not to me
All of this is just my opinion and I love working on these types of projects so I am biased.... I really hope it was the OP who made the purchase. I would be happy to help to bring that beauty back to life.

I have my brothers boat for sale.
28 foot Reinell. Live aboard cabin cruiser. Twin 305 Chevy's.
Engines good, props and out drives good, hull good, trailer good, 6 new tires. Just an older cabin cruiser but it floats and goes vroom.
Just needs a thermostat on the port engine and a new surge brake actuator on the trailer.
It was in the marina until February. My brother passed away in November. Otherwise it would still be there.
$3000.00 firm.

I knew your brother from the Marina and through a mutual friend, sorry for your loss. The boat, for the price, sounds like a good deal. I mean a boat that floats and goes vroom around Lake Powell that you can sleep on for 3k? It's incredible to
me how little great old boats bring. If you put a little money, work and love into them they can pay you back ten fold IMO

Yes, it's a good old boat. It was Ron's first boat. Unfortunately he didn't get to enjoy it much. Rick stayed on it for a while so I'm guessing it was Rick who knew.
Did you know Rick or was it Ron? Rick is skinny as a rail, smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish. Ron was the exact opposite.
Rick is still with us. Ron passed the day before Thanksgiving.

I think I met them both and I hope to meet you soon too at Powell. I relaunched my boat today after pulling it two weeks ago for some maintainance. Today was outstanding on othe lake. mid 70's, no wind, warm sun and yet you could see snow on Navajo Mountain. I'm leaving in the morning, regrettably.I spent the day with a garden hose in my hand knocking winter off my boat, good times.

My dear brother passed suddenly a few months ago also.
At his Celebration of Life we showed many pics of him literally having the 'time of his life' at our Lake Powell
I find some solace is gained by getting his 'stuff' into new, appreciative hands....perhaps you do, too.
