Cool Looking Smallie

Love when they get dark like that. I remember catching some dark smallies like this up in Quetico National Forrest in Canada. So pretty!

Anyone explain why they have such different markings? Some have red eyes and some have black eyes? Are they all the same or is there some different strains that are mixed in? Is it the water, cover, or feed or what that makes the difference?

My guess on eye color is that it is a lot like human genetics - some people have brown eyes, some blue and some hazel. Smallmouth seem to be doing the same with eye color and different markings.
