The owners of the canoe got in touch with me today. They are safe. They were headed to the marina from moqui and got caught in a sudden wind gust in open water. They got pitched from the canoe and ditched the swamped canoe in an effort to save themselves and their 3 month old puppy. They are okay and the NPS is helping them retrieve their gear.

That is awesome news, I didn't ever buy into the canoe just got away. I am so glad to hear they are Ok. I all ways have two jackets in my boat and a throw cusion. But I rarely put on a jacket. Maybe twice in all the years I have fished. Was the puppy good to? I sure hope so, but that would be a scary deal. Would love to hear the story, where it happened etc. Hope they realize how most storys like this are not a good ending

Depending on how far shore is in 40° water during the winter with few boats around I would probably take my chances to go for the bank.

Cold water is no joke. When I hunted in Quebec, we had to wear a pfd at all times in a boat. We were told we would still die from hypothermia, but it made body recovery much easier.

But we weren't in that cold water.
I saved some people I know, that over turned there boat at 9000 ft, and it was COLD water. I was the only boat with them on this lake, it was the happiest time they ever seen me

Since very few of us know the full story on what happened, I suggest that they did exactly the right thing. Staying in 50 degree water even for a short time is a recipe for hypothermia.
The chances of a boat happening by and performing a rescue during March is very slim.

We can all be thankful that this story has a happy ending.

Glad they are safe and it worked out this time even though you should never leave you boat even if it is swamped.

I would imagine the water was pretty darn cold, I would suspect hypothermia set in pretty quick after they hit the water. Probably took everything they had just to make it to shore safely.

I suspect they were coming up the western shoreline (or northern in bullfrog)when they got hit with that westerly or northerly wind. They knew it was now or never to get to the bank and to the marina or blow to the other side. I’m glad they made it!!

Good point. I grew up un Oregon and Washington and am used to offshore standards. It makes sense to swim to shore in a narrow body of water like Powell.
