We camped on the north side of the bay. We launched on the
Old mining road. It's as far west as you can drive. The cat fish in powell are some of the best eating and very under fished for. We never keep any if the walleye and crappie are caught or we have too many stripers to fillet, but they are delicious under 4 pounds.

Years ago we camped by the lake up the Notum road. Striper and Bass fishing during the day and Catfishing at night from shore. We caught a bunch of channel cats all about 2 lbs. I filet’d them up and they were great.
I still filet the cats I catch and mix them in with the other fish filets, no one has every complained about our fish fry’s yet.
I just never fish specifically for cats anymore. We actually catch quite a few trolling and striper fishing. I just don’t target them. I don’t know why they always make you think that they are bigger than they are.

Years ago with the houseboat in the upper San Juan, we had parked near a field of dead tumbleweeds. We were overrun with mice on the houseboat. I was catching 4-5 every hour throughout the night. I would throw the dead ones into the water and go back to bed. It finally dawned on me to wonder what was happening to those dead mice. I pitched one out and put the spot light just over the top of it. Soon a group of 3-4 catfish were circling the mouse and one grabbed it with a slurp. I should have gone fishing but bed sounded better. The next morning I could find no dead mice, guess the cats got all of them. Chuck

Made a quick day trip down to blue notch on Friday 4/7 one rather large rock in the road. Outside of that the road is in great shape ... man it breaks my heart how low it is But the lake is truly very lush a GREEN right now. The water clarity was pretty decent but the water temps are still pretty chilly. Only managed 1 Crappie for the day. Lucky for her the first one goes back "even if she was the only one lol" Will be back down 4/21. Tight lines everyone

That water looks perfect right now, did you meet Jim and Dallas? Probably never a quick trip on that road, even with out the rocks .

I just got back last night. Left Jim he is going to be down there till the 20th. If your down there check him out . Fishing real slow I only caught catfish and one crappie . water temp was between 48 to up to 60 in the mud from red canyon. Carp and and Gizzard shad are spawning . Crappie are in there but slow , out of 4 of use we caught about 6 , striper where skinny are very few.
I had a great time , hot . I had a friend Rush come down and he almost rolled his truck on the hill that I call pucker. He fell in to the washed out rut on the bottom and was on 3 wheels . He got out by himself , be careful when go down there.

Also came across a group of 6 ,that where on a guide trip . That floated down from Hite carrying bikes and rode them out back to hwy 95 . And I thought I am crazy.

Looks like a great time, to bad water wasn't a little warmer for you guys. Jim will stay long enough to see a few degrees warmer, and that makes a huge difference.

Just got back from the notch, and I got to hang with Jim a bit. He is a really cool dude, lots of knowledge of the lake. Looking forward to more trips in the notch with my new toy.
