Best or Worst Spot ever...CID (Cathedral In The Desert)

Ice Cream sand hill is across from Wahweap marina. If you are at the boat launch it’s about 10:00 across the bay. It’s a white sand hill. We call it Ice Cream because there was a camp area over there called that when the water was much higher.

maybe you guys call it something else?

Sounds like the entrance to Ice Cream canyon which runs north from Wahweap Bay

Don't know if WW kept the photos in their file...I'll look if interested.

Here you go...

Not every visitor to the lake knows what CID is.....
True. I'm new to Powell. Just started going last year. I had heard of CID but had no idea where it was or really what it looked like.

Over memorial this year I happened upon it while exploring with my son. I didn't know what it was at the time but we were saying to each other how great of a camping spot it would be. We did find out later it was CID.

All I know is I am getting too old and out of shape to climb it in the heat. Last time I went up to the top I about died. Haha.

I call it Sand Hill. Not too creative, I know.
I didn't think it was accessible by boat until the lake is above 3600'.

It is a heck of a hike though. Especially in the heat.

I've been boating LP since 1989 and honestly had never heard about CID until this year. I guess I'm out of the know. Been to Rainbow Bridge 20 or so times, and remember when it was about a 2 block hike and there was water underneath it.

Here you go...

Thanks Bart, I didn't remember posting those in Sept. 2017...maybe it was due to the new WW format changeover.
The trip was around Nov. 2008.

Wonder if anyone's seen Dreamweaver over the past few years. He found a lot of dinosaur tracks while exploring Lake Powell. (Usually by himself for a month at a time...in a big houseboat.) Believe there's a book out on the tracks.

I remember those photos! So amazing they were! I think they were on the old site which is lost in space :( Good to see you post here again!

To the OP...wow, hard to imagine anyone thinking they could bully other boaters away from that epic spot! Sad.

That's a great way to put it, they were generally bullying everybody away from "their" spot. Ridiculous. I honestly feel like it's akin to somebody parking a houseboat on the Rainbow Bridge at high water.

I have no idea where CID is. Been going to the lake since the mid 90’s and have been to Rainbow about a million times with different guest.

this last trip we went all the way up face and there was a nice beach to park the boat. What a fun hike up the canyon. Our group loved it.

can someone PM me and tell me where CID is? Would love to have some more destinations.

Mike

Hi Mike,
I believe CID stands for Cathedral in the Desert. Amongst the environmentalists it is one of the more iconic spots of the old Glen Canyon.

Thanks. That explains why I have never been there. We don’t go that far up lake. Haha.

Yeah and I've never seen the lake south of Dangling Rope in my 23 years going to Powell. I've only been there a handful of times of that. I do go to Rainbow Bridge with my newbie friends and family members every year and occasionally make the 7 Mile dash down to DR for gas and ice cream when it's open. I know I'm missing out on quite a bit of the lake but the farther south I go that means more people which I really don't care for. No offense to you South Enders, us North Enders don't like crowds for the most part.

Mike, sorry it wasn't more clear about where it was but I think you have an idea now. Escalante (mm 67 or so) is my jam for watersports and even fishing reasons. Second Canyon up on the left side, Clear Creek. Indian Creek is before that. Go to end of Clear Creek, CID is there.

I encountered the same experience on the 5th, this past week. Headed up lake for a few hours to visit Cathedral in the desert for the first time, only to find a houseboat blocking all accessible parts of the beach. They specifically had paddle boards and a splash pad on the beach blocking the only spot to pull on with a boat. Hung out for 20 minutes hoping someone would offer to let us park and nothing. Being courteous, we had lunch in another canyon and stopped at Anastazi canyon on the way back, it did not disappoint!

FYI: At the current level I could see the tops of some cottonwoods a few inches below the surface… as the lake lowers they will begin to block access to larger boats.

It's the same houseboat as shown on the earlier photos...

It’s more commonly known as Sand King

Yeah I was going to say that, it's the same boat, Pau Hana. I saw it there on the 29th. And looks like they repositioned the left bit, blocking the small area I beached on. That Yellow and Black Master craft was up the Escalante one evening surfing in my Cove too. I guess I should have filled my ballast and started surfing right outside CID. That would have maybe helped washed some of the sand out of there too!

When wake surfers get rude and come by me a few times vs their own area where they are parked its great to get in my boat drive head on towards them(Not directly in front but off to the side) where the guy surfing is and slow my boat down as slow as can making its biggest wake then watch as the wakes collide. It really can disrupt their surfing some get the point and move on.
