Best marine radio for Lake Powell on a 20 foot pontoon boat…we overnight camp and want to be safe

The only signal I can receive is NOAA Wx 4. The signal is not as strong as it was last year and the weather forecast areas are not as detailed and do not really cover Lake Powell. Last week I tried a number of places where I've hit NOAA and like you said open carrier only - no voice.
 
the inreach mini is great. The basic plan gives you the ability to send for help pretty much anywhere for like $13 a month . The ability to send text msgs also from anywhere is an added bonus. I would say a marine band and Inreach would be ideal, with inreach being primary.

Wife and I also overnight on the lake. Went with the Zoleo and a hand held. Zoleo works great, we check in with the kids when we arrive and set up camp and in the AM. WORKS GREAT!

x2 on Zoleo, easy to use, connects with your phone via bluetooth so the interface is completely through phone, gives you easy text and email capability (no data, photos). Works great.
 
Donhart is MIA. I hope others benefitted from sage advice of Wordlings, particularly on the new technologies beyond UHF radio.
 
30 years boating on the lake and have never felt the need for a Sat phone. Modern Horizon VHF with an 8' antenna has always been to go to ... Since cell phone we find it easy to connect with other people in our party when we can't all launch on the same day. First person on the beach sends a text with the GPS coordinates and a channel they will monitor. Easy Peasy....

Well that works great if they camp on a beach with cell service. Haha

But with lake levels low cell coverage is not great.

We have had the Inreach for a couple years and was really useful especially on our smaller boat. With Starlink on our houseboat and our friend cruisers that has become the mode of communication. But when out on our small boat sat comms is the best.

Radio communication is also worse at lower lake
Levels.
