Best Lure at Lake Powell

Best lure is Heddon Zara Spook Topwater. Used the 1/4 oz flitter shad Zara Puppy on 10lb mono. I just recommend you buy two, mine broke after 20 catches. Anywhere you see fish breaking the surface you’ll catch ‘em. Mornings were productive but ~3 pm and later was most active. Stayed in Last Chance. Good luck!

When boil fishing with a spook I have found it best to wait until you feel them to set the hook or beware of the dreaded flying spook.

It depends for what you are fishing. As a smallmouth guy I think the very best lure is the Yamamoto Shad Shaped Worm in watermelon/white laminate, natural shad and smallmouth magic. The second best lure is the Yamamoto Senko in the first two colors. I fish the Shad Shaped Worm on a drop shot rig and the Senko weightless and wacky rigged. For smallmouth I don't see the need to carry much else. Other lures/presentations will work, of course, but these two are just the most consistent for me.

I have always felt Powell was a free for all for lures. Two years ago, the last good big striper winter. I caught fish on everything from 4” yo zuri’s to 10” tuna plugs. The absolute best thing about Powell is going to a 3x strength treble hook is mandatory, unless you like reeling in lures with straight hooks. I found out much to my surprise that a 22” striper has no problem with a tuna plug. I sure hope we get an epic snow fall for the next few years.

My favorite boil lure is a Skitter Pop. They come in many colors and all work on surfacing fish. But, if I want to "fill the cooler" from a boil I'll go to a 3/4 oz white bucktail jig. You can throw it a mile, catch fish by jigging under the boat and being single hook, fish can be unhooked and you are back at it in minimum time. C
