This is a good article on the exponential growth in tourism in Page, AZ, including Lake Powell, both of which are now significant international tourist destinations. This article is specifically about Antelope Canyon.

p.s. I was on the lake up Navajo Canyon when the storm in 1997 hit killing 11 in Antelope Canyon. I still remember the VHF radio traffic from that day....

p.s.s. I've personally never been on an Antelope Canyon tour for the precise reasons stated in the article - there are many "free" canyons to see similar to Antelope around Page/Lake Powell where I don't have to be chest to chest with those in my tour group, all taking selfies!:) I have hiked up Antelope Canyon from the lake side - it's a great hike, but I've run into rattlers every time I've done this hike stopping our progress - they must be placed there by the tour operators to keep people from hiking further (haha).
