The Wahweap launch ramp was open to everybody today, but limited to day use only, Fri-Sun, from 7am-8pm. The boat ramps at Stateline and Antelope Point remained closed. At 7am, the line at the Wahweap Launch Ramp was nearly 1 mile long with about a 1 hour wait to launch. I heard that next week the NPS is going to open Lake Powell 24/7 on May 15 by keeping stateline launch ramp closed until May 22. I have not heard any info on when Antelope Point launch ramp will open.
It took longer to launch a boat at Wahweap today than it would to catch 100 smallmouth. So just add another 100 fish to this report....just kidding! We arrived at Wahweap at 7am and finally got to the mouth of West Canyon about 2 hours later. The water surface temp there was 73*F. The smallmouth were going crazy. From about 9am to noon, we were catching smallmouth on nearly every cast with double hook ups. We were catching about 3-4 for every 1 kept and none were over 1.5 pounds. I was using a 1/8 ounce jig with a 3" grub in smoke/silver flake. My partner was using a 1/4 ounce jig with a Yamamoto 5 inch grub that was green with silver flake. All the fish were shallow and caught in less than 20 feet deep. We had kept 10 smallmouth by noon and filleted them on the boat keeping the skin attached to show species and quantity if checked by UT DWR.
We then went to the back of Last Chance. There was a lull in the action during mid day, but we still caught fish. We caught 3 largemouth that were all thrown back. Also caught 4 crappie and threw back 2. We did catch a 3 pound striper in good condition that showed up while jigging the shoreline for smallmouth. At about 6pm, we stopped fishing and headed back to the marina.
Overall, we (2 guys in a bass boat) fished for 9 hours and caught about 60 fish representing 4 different species consisting of 52 smallmouth, 4 crappie, 3 largemouth, and 1 striper. We kept 20 fish consisting of 17 smallmouth, 2 crappie, and 1 striper.
