Umbrella rigs on leadcore

Anyone here have experience with this setup? I acquired a bunch of these rigs recently and haven’t tried them yet. I’ve read some archived threads with good results but I think most were long lining them. I can see how they would run good behind down riggers on a short lead but with leadcore, it takes alot of line out. I have trouble getting cranks deeper than 30’ at striper speeds(3-4mph). Just wondering how they preform behind 5-10 colors and what speeds are effective. I’m mostly talking about open water/summer trolling, the cranks work just fine otherwise. Would be sweet if they swim good at 2mph and you could get 50’ out of leadcore. Could be a tangled nightmare if the driver gets off task

I use 2oz, if the fish are in 30ft, or less, and 6oz if they are in deep water, and the fish are 40 to 60 ft. I've never used leaded line, for umbrella's, and never really thought of using it. All I have ever used, is power pro 30lb braid. If the fish are in 30ft, or only down 20 to 30ft, when I start seeing a lot of them on the graph, I will let it down, until it hit's bottom, and then come up through the fish. The fall, is about the only time I use the umbrella rig's. And they are very effective, catching double's, and triple's, pretty often some year's. I use Hiper striper's, with Walleye assassin's. It is an expensive setup, if you lose them. You can get 50ft, with the 6oz, and braid, pretty easy, but in the fall, you rarely have to go that deep.
The San Juan, will be perfect for them this year, Up past the bend, in 30 to 45ft of water.

Snap weights? Or a 6 oz umbrella rig? I’m confused on how you are trolling them. And what speed are you going? I’m looking forward to doing some true research on this

And your point about seeing a school below target depth and going to neutral then pulling up through the school. It works great with leadcore, floating cranks hold up the process. These heavy umbrella rigs might let a guy run a shorter leed and have more control on a tight school of rats!

This is almost exactly how we do it. Only run on braid. And only pull them out in the fall and that's when they work great. Now we just need Utah to allow more than 3 hooks per rig for lake powell. We always end up with a bunch of missed hits on the hookless baits.

I just use umbrella rig's, 2 and 6 oz, nothing else. 2.8 TO 3 MPH. With 6oz umbrella rig's, and 4 hyper striper's, 1 1/2 oz, you don't have to let out a lot of line. But I use a 25 count, to start, and go from there. I've been fishing them for a lot of year's now, and it's a lot easier to show some one, then to try and tell you. But my point is, I've never needed lead core line to get down to the fish. And they make power pro, with 25ft, a color, for more precise control. But the count work's for me, with the regular power pro, and it's cheaper.
And I use 4 Hyper striper, on every UM rig.

Thanks for the replies. Have you ever tried them in the summer? They can’t just be successful in the fall.

We've had success with umbrella rigs in the spring as well. We pull 2 oz 5 lead rigs with 3" swimbaits in white or chartreuse on 3 leads, with the other 2 leads having single, silver willow blades on them for extra attention (to be legal in UT). We also run them on braid and find fish generally in the backs of the canyons in 30-40' over humps. We've had several amazing days doing this in the back of Warm Creek in April. Always fun when you get 2 or 3 at a time! :)

It is fun, we were catching 3 at a time, a lot, three year's ago in November, and they were all 4 1/2 to 5 lb Striper's, in the San Juan. I will be there again this year, if the North Crappie fishing will let me.
Do you run them with bait caster's?
