Had a fantastic, albeit short trip to the pond. My brother flew in from Hawaii, and I had just returned from Texas to my home in Cali. We arrived Monday evening after a 10 hour drive from SoCal. We struck out first thing Tuesday morning for an up and backer from Wahweap to Moqui. Incredible warmth, no wind, all the way up and back, which took about 14 hours, counting all the jump-ins and floats. Then, on Wednesday morning from 5:00 a.m. onward, we skied the dam, Maytag Straits and most of Navajo Canyon (just before the daily refueling and apparent trash runs) that Navajo Canyon boaters gotta do. Knowing that you are fortunate to get one perfect run per morning in that canyon, what with fetch issues and rebounding boat wakes, we hit paydirt: fabulous water, nice air, no wind, and sublime lighting conditions through mid-Navajo Can. So much of the time I am on the lake, I feel like I am in a living postcard of a vacation destination that can't truly exist. After us two AARP-ers skied for a couple of hours, we were half-dead and deeply happy. We floated another 5 hours in abiding shade, read some Rilke, and headed in to APM for lunch. Then, I got the call I dreaded: a family emergency in Texas. Made the 10 hour drive home, and now getting ready to fly back to Texas. Looking forward to next time on the lake.
