Keeper of San Juan Secrets
I just wanted to send a big thank you to Wayne and his wife Charlene. Yesterday I had the privilege of meeting them for lunch in Page. What a treat! We had a great time, plenty of things to talk about, and just a fun time to enthuse over Lake Powell and a million other topics. It was fun to trade tidbits of information, little tips here and there, or for me, to gain a some insights about the lake that can only come from somebody like Wayne. I can tell you this much: Charlene is the secret ingredient in that partnership, for a lot of reasons. I really enjoyed getting to know her and her infectious enthusiasm to pretty much jump into anything--she's the daredevil in that family. And of course Wayne was exactly the way you'd think: kind, funny, polite, knowledgeable. It was so nice to spend a few hours with them.

Thanks again, Wayne--that was a highlight of my trip!

This is such a kool thread...and a great photo.... (y) (y)

Wayne, did you know Stan Jones and discuss our lake with him?

Yes I knew Stan Jones and talked with him about Lake Powell when I was young and just starting out as the fisheries manager at the lake.
He helped me by sharing his ideas about the lake. I arrived here in 1975 and have grown up with the lake in the past 50 years.

I sure wish I could have been a fly on the wall to listen in. Thank you all for helping us enjoy Lake Powell!
A photo of Wayne not holding a fish — a rare find. Way to go, John!
I didn't see any flies on the wall. It was a pretty clean establishment. But it was a very interesting discussion. Here's what I can tell you for sure--Wayne really knows Lake Powell. But Charlene might know it even better...

Well, Charlene has been here as long as I have, so she knows Lake Powell very well. She is a better conversationist than I am. But, I know the lake better. So between the two of us we can find our way uplake. I point her in the right direction and she tells everyone where we are going and how to get there. We are a good team and we both enjoy going out on the lake. We are still doing well after 50 years.

Our good friends, Tom and Velma Eaton, used to shuttle Stan around the lake in the early days. Did you happen to know Tom and Velma. He ran one of the first boat rental businesses in Page during the filling of the Lake. Tom and Velma have since passed away, but their daughter Patty is still not too far away.

Now this is a piece of rare LP historical trivia...Stan Jones...."Mr. Lake Powell'......without a boat! Who woulda thunk there could ever have been such a time!! 🤣 Thanks for sharing! (y)

Sorry I don't think I knew Tom and Velma.

Lovely to hear of your nice lunch. JFR, you also express encyclopedic (and poetic) knowledge about our wonderful lake. Sometimes your missives read like excellent textbooks. Glad things are going well for all. We are all privileged to have experienced this wonderful region.
