Cup caught crappy spices. I caught several species but no crappie. We went down for the 3 day boating opportunity. Got a late start from Bullfrog marina about noon Friday. Went over to Hall's Creek Bay and started catching with smoke sparkle jigs, firetiger cranks, white/ green jigs. The bite improved when we switched to ned rigs california craws. We quit counting and had several in the live well when we quit at 5:00 pm. Upon fileting, smallmouth with crayfish in there bellies was the norm. Some of the smaller fish were spitting out small white 1 inch minnows as we reeled them in. We kept 16 in the live well but threw at least 5 back for every one kept.
Saturday we went up to Crystal to find 4 boats fishing we caught maybe 15 smallies.
Tried a few other places but not as good ss the day before. Wind came up so we tried from the houseboat slip with limited success.
Sunday am back to Halls with the same fast bite. Found a small striper school and got one on ned rig.
Lessons learned:
Never leave fish to find fish
All fish in great condition
Smallies haven't spawned yet
Let the fish tell you what they want
Biggest fish were in deeper water
Nothing caught in over 20 ft.
Rocky structure produces
Stay in one spot and cast several times
Fish slow

Smallmouth spawn multiple times each spring, and have been going at it for almost a month. The male guards the nest and protects the small fish for a few days after hatching. Then he swims away and goes back to the original nest or fans a new rocky area if the lake is rising. Female bass visit the nest and lay sticky eggs on the rocks. Then the male guards those eggs for about 4 days before hatching. This process is repeated 3-5 times each spring. Male does the hard work guarding the nest and the females are always loaded with eggs. They only spawn about 500-1000 eggs each time they spawn. They will still have eggs in the ovary long after the spawning season is over.

Funny guys. Take a kid fishing. Bait his hook for him. Maneuver the boat so he has the best access to casting towards shore. Hand him the needle nose pliers when he catches the fish. Wipe off the vinyl where the sunscreen was on his seat. Listen to him wonder why i caught another and another and another. Naturally he was the NOMO!
