Stripers at Rock Creek September 24-26

Left Wahweap early Wednesday morning and found a nice spot for the houseboat near the front of Dry Rock Creek. Late September - we have always had good luck jigging for stripers near the back of Dry Rock Creek. Ha! Not this year. There were a few stripers there but they turned up their noses (do stripers have noses?). at our jigs, soft lures, topwater lures, etc.. We were skunked on Wednesday evening and Thursday. Totally depressing. Back on Friday to the same spot in Dry Rock Creek where we had seen stripers on the previous two days only this time earlier in the morning and armed with anchovies. Caught two small healthy stripers before we decided to move on into the back third of Rock Creek Canyon (37°09'03.3"N 111°11'16.9"W). There, we hit a motherlode of stripers. In about 60’ of water, stripers were sometimes stacked up to 30’. They hit anchovies and were happy to attack our jigs. We caught all we cared to fillet on Friday morning and afternoon. Smaller stripers had the best fillets. All looked healthy, but the larger stripers were a bit skinny. And as a “bonus” we caught five catfish who fought like the dickens - all five were returned to the lake.
