Got an early start and beat most of the traffic up lake. Still a frog in the straights area though. Fished edges of Padre and then up to areas of Last Chance. Fishing was great! Smallmouth we’re on beds, and even walleye we’re cruising. Caught around 200 that first day. I was able to use my favorite Powell bait most of the day, a Yamamoto double tail hula (spider jig). Caught every species except Crappie the first day and my two newbie nephews who have been refining their skills on ponds and canals in the Gilbert area were in heaven. Both of them passed the test and could’ve fished all day long. Made it back at the end of that day in the dark, took us 1:45 to get from midway down Last Chance back to State Line. Again, I see what all the fuss is about in regard to the CRC lol.
Day 2, got a much later start and probably only fished half the time as the day before. Traffic up lake was much worse and of course so we’re the waves. Once you got past Dominguez butte traffic slowed way down. Fished Last Chance again and caught at probably the same percentage as the day before. Soft plastics thrown towards the shore, and fished a little slower for walleye of the cove bottoms. Heading back three hound kids in a kodiak boat with a little 20 horse waved us down, their gas bulb was stuck and so the motor was losing gas. Got them up and running back to their houseboat a cove up.
Also on the way down noticed we were taking on water, the tremendous chop from the straights had once again broke a weld on our keel and would gush water in while on plane. Luckily the bilge could keep up and we were okay. This is the same spot we had spot welded last year after Crestliner wouldn’t get back in touch with us… I suspected that an earlier south end trip had done the same for the original situation. So, we shall see. Also got pulled over by DNR after missing the turn into the check station just before Kanab, don’t miss it! Glad they were doing that though.
Monday we did a tour of the upper antelope canyon, very cool! We did not mess with the lake or traffic Monday. Driving back to Utah County was nice, no slow downs or even heavy traffic at all.
Loved the south end, just hate the slog up lake in the straights.
