We arrived at Bullfrog Thursday afternoon and set up at the Campground. We fished the shallow area across from Moki and did decent catching Stripers, Large mouth and Smallies. We headed up lake to Crystal Springs and caught more of the same. Plenty of fish for a quick afternoon evening trip. On our way back to camp we saw a small Slurp and managed a couple of Stripers before they disappeared.
Friday we headed to the Escalante but decided to fish the main channel and coves near the Mouth of the Escalante. It didn't disappoint. We used Ned Rigs, Salt and Pepper single tail grubs, and anchovies. The Ned rig color was Goby Bryant or Mudd Minnow. I let my Ned rig fall deep under a shady rock ledge and the on retrieval hooked into a nice walleye. Later that day while getting into the Stripers a nice Large mouth was caught. The smallies were willing and some nice ones were caught also. The Bluegill and Sunfish are large and everywhere. Using a light jig head and gulp minnows, we were able to catch them on almost every cast. They are mighty little fighters. It was a day of personal bests for us catching fish. We caught quantity and quality. The fish cleaning station was open and running. We got the stripers off ice and filleted a cooler of them. The Stripers we caught were mostly healthy but there were some skinny ones for sure. We ran into slurps in the morning and caught good sized stripers in the slick rock area on our way down lake.
Saturday was spent again in the Escalante area near the main channel. We caught as many fish as we wanted. On our way back to camp we rant into large Slurps in the Slick Rock area. There was one large group of Stripers and many small groups moving in all directions. We casted into the slurps using salt and pepper walleye/ bass assasins with a 1/4 jig head. We hooked into many fish almost every cast until out of range and had to reposition the boat and then we would hook into them again. My Wife absolutely loves chasing the slurps. It was the highlight of our trip.
This trip we fished a lot in the main channel and small coves.
I'm curious how others feel about catch rates in the main channel vs finger canyons. I always want to hit the canyons but we found fish in the main channel and didnt want to leave fish to find fish.
Thanks,
Nate
