Hey All,

I’m still relatively new to this forum. So if something like this already exists or isn’t worth the time, or has been done abd didn’t go well, no sweat.

It seems to me that there are a lot of great people here. This forum is its own little community with many people I would enjoy meeting at some point in time.

I thought a really fun way to facilitate that would be to have a WW fishing tournament. Is this something that has been done in the past? Is it something that we could get enough attention over to actually make it worth while (ie. Prizes, sponsors, etc…)?

Any interest? Thoughts? Pros or cons to the idea? Any one here have experience and interest in organizing something like this?

I agree but I have no experience or answers. There are a lot of legends on here but most are humble and only want to fish and help others quietly from what I have experienced. Great idea, not sure how to pull it off. I believe they all used to fish at the rallies but don’t think they had a contest? There are many in this group that can answer your questions and I hope they chime in. I know it was talked about earlier this year and those who had put them (rallies) on commented that it took a group to do it, it was not an easy task which I am sure they are correct. it takes someone to take it by the horns and get er done.

I just hosted a local fishing derby in Wyoming a few months ago and there is a lot of work that goes into it. I purely did prize money and without sponsors and it still was quite the undertaking. I also stayed below the minimum requirements so I didnt have to have any permitting.

Regardless, I think another rally is a great idea. However, I THINK most folks like to go down, relax, fish at their own pace, and take in all of lake powell’s beauty. Not necessarily worry about being in a tournament. I know I do! And this comes from a guy that travels around to fish different derbies when I can!

Just my opinion! I would be all for a shad rally if dates align, but I don’t think I would enter a derby.

Our Shad Rallies were mostly for catching as many Stripers as possible to "save the shad" and also we raised money for the Friends of Lake Powell organization. I missed taking part in the early days of those Rally's but I jumped on board, and got involved and had a TON of fun. We later incorporated it to include a group of wounded veterans, and it grew even larger.
After our incredible friend Petester and Patty both passed away, the rallies faded. It's sad, but that's what happens in life unfortunately. Several times rallies have been discussed on here, but have never come to fruition. We did have small prizes for the NOMO and SOMO (north oh mighty one) and (south oh mighty one) and a Jr category as well. My son won it one year
Many great friendships were formed, and a few still keep in touch!

Ditto that!

As Lake Bum said there were rallies at Stanton in the north and Lone Rock (sometimes at the Stateline picnic area) in the south. Wayne would attend to give us a pep talk and the latest fishing news on the lake. There are a million pictures among the many attendees....somewhere. I attended the North twice flying into Bullfrog so Wayne could attend and make his presentations and once Patty and Pete came along. The north rally was usually in the fall and the south in the spring. As Lake Bum said we concentrated on stripers and whatever walleye we could catch. The events usually culminated with a big fish fry (compliments of Ken Lee, the master chef) and adult beverages. We did have two rallies where we invited 6-7 wounded warriors to attend and recruited local guides to take them fishing. They stayed on one of the houseboats. It was easier then as we had the Castle rock Cut open for up lake access. There used to be breakfast gatherings of "wordlings" in the various communities where many of lived. Chuck

Wish I had been around during those Rally’s. I’ve actually never fished in a Rally or a tournament, except an ice fishing tourney in Gull Lake. MN. That was kind of boring.

I think my intent in mentioning/asking is really just an excuse to meet and learn from the people here. And it just sounds like a great adventure to me!

I know so little about tourney fishing that I have no idea what they entail.
But if there is anyone here on WW that knows more and wanted to set something up, I’ll throw my hat in the ring to help organize.

It would be easy to an online fishing tournament using the Fish Donkey or Fish Brain app. . .
