I wanted to see if any WWers have used Seadek instead of carpeting on their boats. I have heard good things about it on durability, ease of cleaning, traction, and protection from the blazing heat that bare aluminum, or any metal surface, can inflict. Some of the pro river runners/raft frame fabricators swear by it, especially on the non retention of sand. ( might not be problem at Powell) Only 1/4 inch thick with a 3m (?) backed peel and stick adhesive. Anyone using Seadek? Anyone with experience with Gatorstep or Aquatraction as an alternative?

Recommend light color choices for Powell, as this color has gotten very warm to the touch or on your feet. The sand at Powell as you know gets every where, when we pull her out I take the hose/pressure washer and it cleans up back to new.

Looks really good! I know you can get it in 40”x80” sheets for DIY but also have it patterned which looks like what you did. How long have you had it on the boat?

I looked at it when I did the carpeting on my bass boat -- I ordered all the samples, and in the end decided to go stick with the carpet -- 3 big reasons --1. cost -- 2. reports were that it got much hotter in the sun-- 3. it is not recommended to go around the edges of the lids on my bass boat, so the fit would not look right --
If I was looking at a boat like the one pictured above, that would be a different story.

Leardriver, I have been wanting to put this on my swimdeck but I always strap a cooler to the deck during trips and numerous coolers to/from camp. With your experience, how durable do you think it would be for this sort of use? I use a couple rotomilled coolers with rubber foot pads, I'm guessing any movement of the coolers would want to rip the seadeck off. Your boat sure looks great with it.

GatorStep is another option.

I did Sea Dek on the swim platform of my old boat. Good product. Didn’t love their service.

I added GatorStep to the top deck of my Malibu. Great product. Great service.

We have seadek on our swim deck and I’ve torn it multiple times with heavy coolers and an anchor. It’s nice and pretty durable but you definitely have to be careful with it. That said when it does cut or tear it isn’t very noticeable.

we have the light grey and it gets about as hot as the sea grass carpet inside the cabin.

I prefer carpet inside the boat without doubt because when The boat gets sandy I can just remove the carpet and wash it rather than hose down the whole boat which forces me to wipe every single surface down to get the water spots.

Carpet is also far more durable Assuming you have the good sea grass type.

I would be more nervous about the abrasive tendencies of something that was strapped on there. The constant rubbing would probably win and scuff something up. The adhesive seems to be good. Maybe if you strapped a cooler down on a pad and then onto the Seadek material?
It's not fragile in the least, you would just be in test pilot territory.

@CHRIS MCBETH my experience of durability is far different than yours. In my experience, GatorStep or SeaDek is FAR more durable than any carpet.
SeaDek vs what I’m referring to as carpet (actually Snap-in woven synthetic sea grass) isn’t even close.

The SeaDek will tear very easily compared to the seagrass weaves. Try putting a 80lb cooler on seadek and sliding it... it’ll either tear or mar the surface. Do the same thing with the sea weave fabrics and you’ll never know.

i love the look of SeaDek and it is a bit grippier so things don’t slide around but it does damage easier than quality seaweaves. snap-mount carpets can also be removed which is nice for cleanup.

I guess I haven’t seen “snap in woven synthetic sea grass”. But both the SeaDek and GatorStep I’ve used would pass your cooler test.

What wouldn’t pass your test is the snaps on the snap in carpet part.

I’m not sure why you’re arguing with me about my own experience. The SeaDek gets cut and scuffed far easier than any quality carpet.

Our SeaDek on the swim deck has held up ok, but the fin on our wake board has cut it, the full cooler has cut it, and the anchor has cut it, and not from very much force.

the snaps on our woven sea grass carpets are smooth and rounded and don’t protrude more than a couple mm above the surface. theyve never been an issue.

im definitely not saying SeaDek isn’t great, it is. it looks great Too.

But I wouldn’t replace the carpets inside our cockpit with it because it’s permanent, harder to replace, more expensive, and easier to damage In my experience Having both for 3 years.

LOL. I'll let it go after this, but I think it is funny that you're not sure why I'm arguing about your experience, but you are willing to argue with me about my experience.

The SeaDek I had on my old boats platform held up to everything, including water sports, coolers and 90 pound dogs. The GatorStep has held up as well. I honestly can't imagine it tearing. We are averaging 125 hours per year on our Malibu, and while I take care of it, we don't baby it. I have GatorStep on the swim platform as well as the top deck of the boat, and it still looks new.

Is this the stuff you are talking about? Engineered Marine Carpet Boat Carpet Marine Flooring Decks Docks

Because that is what is on the floor of my Malibu and I don't like it. It's rough on your feet. Hurts your knees when kneeling. Holds water under the flooring, above the fiberglas floor, and has to be taken out to dry out. It gets ridiculously hot, and the snaps have pulled out of it from our 75 quart Yeti that lives in the boat.

If/when I replace the Deckadance in the Malibu, it will be with GatorStep.

No reason for the OP not to see both sides of this conversation. I am happy with SeaDek/GatorStep, and absolutely recommend it. Sounds like you feel the same way about your product. To each their own.....
