My 2 youngest kids and I broke loose this weekend and ventured up to the Rock Creek area. Fishing was overall Pretty Good. We fish primarily for Walleye using home made spinner rigs and bottom bouncers (crawlers) at 0.7-1.2MPH. We generally catch about everything under the sun using this method and this weekend did not disappoint.

Fri 4-26
After school we bounced up lake through the extra-long rough main channel due to this years low water (sad face) and setup base camp in the mouth of West Canyon. By the time we got camp setup, daylight was getting low and the W*$d was up so we turned in early.

Sat 4-27
Saturday morning we went up the right fork of Rock Creek. The fishing started slow but heated up around 9AM. We then ventured up the Left fork of RC and found that doing well also. All in all, Saturday we caught about 10 Walleye, couple Crappie, 30+ SM, 15+Bluegill, half-dozen Striper, and even a couple carp which gave the kids a good tussle. Weather was Amazing most of the day with a stiff breeze in the afternoon. WT 64-65deg in Rock Creek and a couple degree warmer in West Canyon.

Sun 4-28
Sunday was much slower fishing. We went up the Left fork of RC but only managed to wrangle 4 walleye and a few SM before we called it quits at 11AM to head home before the W$%d started up.

Rising Water:
It's nice to see the water starting to rise. (smiley face) Can't wait until the cut or Antelope is open once again. The extra long and rough boat ride through the main channel from Whaweap is something to consider when going up lake. (Fuel, Time and Ibuprofen)

Water clarity:
I was pleasantly surprised to see the water clarity only about 6-7 feet deep in most places and much less than that towards the back of most canyons. I remember last year in April the water clarity being 25' and it being very hard to find stained water anywhere besides the far back of canyons.

Fish Health:
Most of the fish looked in decent health. The small stripers were fat but medium ones were mixed between skinney and average looking. Most SM looked in good shape. The walleye looked average however I caught a 21" walleye that was a little thin by the dorsal fin. I'm nervously trying to see any impact on fish health from mussel infestation based on my experience over the last 10 years fishing Powell. My observation so far is that fish health has been holding steady but I definitely need to get on the lake again soon to "Collect More Data" ;)
