Just got back from a quick trip to the lake. We fished a few hours on Thurs, most of the day Friday and a few hours Saturday before heading home for Easter. Weather was fantastic. I'm not sure if the FULL Moon had an effect.
We found water temps from 59 degrees to as high as 67 in the back of canyons. The average afternoon Surface temps were about 65 degrees. The water becomes stained around the floating restrooms by entrance to Good Hope. The water is very stained at the top end of good hope, back in the canyons the water is clearer. From the horn up it is more stained than I like to fish only an inch or two visibility we did catch a very few fish in the heavy stained water but did much better in slightly stained water. Four mile was very muddy in its entirety. Wat muddier than I like to fish. Not worth the effort. The runoff when it really kicks in will move the mud line rapidly down lake as the lake is smaller/shorter so conditions will change quickly.
Fishing was fair (subjective, fair fishing at Powell is still pretty good) Three of us caught during the two part days and one full day that we fished, a bunch of SMB, a few LMB about 20 crappie, 12 walleye, 15 incidental stripers while not trying for them (mostly in poor shape, they were caught in shallow water when trying for other fish) and a handful of Bluegill.
We used Curl Tails, Small Swimbaits, Tubes, Ned Rigs in Green, Crawdad, Shad and Chartreuse colors with 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jig heads, also Steel-shad lures in 1/4 and 3/8 sizes. The last day the Steel Shad was the best lure overall and we caught SMB LMB Crappie Stripers and even Bluegill on them. Rock slides and points in the main channel and canyons produced but it was spotty, so we hit spots and if no luck kept moving to find agreeable fish. Also did catch just a few fish on Crankbaits. Most fish were caught between a couple feet and 20 feet deep. We did see some LMB on beds, we let them do their business for the future. **One other note: As has been mentioned in other posts, with the lower water the lake feels and is more confined. Canyons are shorter, many bays and arms are now high and dry. Some good fishing spots are tighter than at higher water levels. When did find spots with boats in them that in the past maybe you could have another boat fishing the area, it was too tight so we let them have some fishing space and we moved to other spots and found action. Hope this helps. Good fishing.
Tight lines,
Mildog

PS you may need a 3/4 oz head to cast to the shoreline if your boat operator keeps you too far from the structure LOL Inside Joke!!!!

It is a Steel Bodied blade bait. You can vertical jig it, cast and retrieve it (with a jig or twitch every so often) I imagine you could troll it, it has great action. I have not tried trolling them. It imitates a shad or other bait fish has a great vibrating action..
I will see if I can get some pics to upload, you should be able to see the lure in these pictures. These pics are from a trip last fall. We did well with them again last week. SW stores, depending on where you live have them and you can find them other places as well I would think.

By SW do you mean Sportsmans' Warehouse? I'm headed that way shortly :).

Look up "blade baits" and you'll find several makes and prices. HERE is a good picture example of the original blade bait, the Heddon Sonar - which I have been fishing since the 1960s. Very versatile lure.

Yes it is similar to a Sonar. It is a modern upgrade to an old standard. The metal they are made out of and the vibration is different. I would say more action and vibration and flash on the Steelshad. For many years the Sonar has been the best Lure for White bass here locally at Utah Lake especially for ice fishing. This winter in comparison the Steelshad out-fished the Sonar by far. A guide from Florida developed it. Jay Yelas a former Bass Master Classic winner, I think helped design them. I know he is a big fan and user of them. You can bend them to change the way they swim and fish them many different ways. They have a variety of colors, White, silver and shad colors have been great at Powell. 1/4 and 3/8 have been the sizes Im using, I want to try the bigger ones for stripers as well. Have caught striper on the 3/8 oz. There are two tie on positions, so far I have been using them as they come , no changes or modifications and have caught a variety of species and lots of fish on them in several lakes and streams. Good info on their website Steelshad.com . Sportsman's Warehouse carries them as well as other stores.
