Keeper of San Juan Secrets
We arrived at 10 AM and unloaded at the executive ramp which was not busy on Wednesday at all. No one at any of the check in stations including the pay station. We headed North and found @Littlesaltwash and met his friend James @Pryor near knolls and BS’ed for a few minutes. Dave brought my net to give me after I had borrowed it to @Chovyboy a month ago on the lake. We fished that day up North around tapestry and several of the canyons in the area. I caught a couple walleye in what looks like the same spot @Dungee took a picture of one they caught last week. We trolled this trip with very little bank fishing and we caught walleye, SM, LM, stripers, and one bluegill.
Day two we went south around the Rincon and fished several spots we like and caught pretty much the same as up North. While we were trolling we thought we had blown a motor and jumped up to see what was happening when we spotted a jet going over head. We counted 12 in the next couple hours with one larger one and 11 fighter jets playing on LP! Always a treat to see them flying low in the canyons! Water was clear in the South and water temp was a bit cooler staying in the upper 60’s, it was up to 75 in the dirty water up North. We caught smaller stripers, SM and walleye down south. Wind did come up in the afternoon both days, not bad but bad enough we trolled most of the time.
Day three we stayed close to BF, we hit a little bay and fish were jumping and splashing almost like a boil so we threw top water and had a ball for a couple of hours. @greyhackle caught a 3.5 lb LM on the first cast in Stanton on a top water and yes we weighed it before turning it back. That was about as good of top water action as I have ever experienced and we had a blast with the little stripers and SM that morning. We headed to Moqui and tried fishing for a few minutes but the boat traffic had started so we headed to the ramp to load and get home. We are too old to enjoy the big crowds that were coming for the weekend!
We caught fish on Rapala Shad raps, XD’s in all sizes, Ned rigs, swim baits and the top water lures we threw on Friday. It was a good trip with plenty of fillets and good company with lots of laughs and old stories recalled from days long ago, we have fished and traveled together for over 55 years and believe me we have some stories!
Thanks to all who have shared their trips in the last few weeks, it does help to plan a trip and catch fish. We never found the bigger stripers we are used to catching and the bigger ones we caught were mostly skinny, smaller ones were fat. Walleye were caught on the bottom from 15 feet to 25 feet with crank baits trolled. I have to agree with most posts that when we did bank fish SM were not where I expected them or their numbers were down in those areas? Great trip with good friends is hard to beat! Good luck to everyone and stay safe!IMG_3335.jpegIMG_3317.jpegIMG_3308.jpegIMG_3324.jpegIMG_3307.jpeg

Great post, we are @ Powell now and have been catching a bunch of fish, larger stripers are on the skinny side but all others are in good shape. Grandson and I have to go back on Wednesday and will keep looking for larger fish. we got into crappies and caught about 40 but they were only about 8 inches and they all got returned to the water.

Someday I will find those pesky crappy! It’s been 40 years since I caught very many of them in one trip. Hopefully those bigger stripers will start filling out with some Shad growing up in the next month.

lots of tree and branches floating at the upper end of Good hope and very muddy water' fished red canyon and did catch some small fish. kept the ones that were hurt but it was a great day up there with no surf boats. Monday rough ride back to Halls.
