Only a matter of time I guess

Behind a pay wall but I’d love to reach it.

Surprised about this as Zebra haven’t been a problem in Colorado and I was speaking to CPW at park HQ on Monday and they told me that Highline was the only water in Colorado that was confirmed contaminated with mussels and they are optimistic that after draining it and letting it freeze it could be confirmed clean.

Pretty sure that veligers nor adults can travel upstream against a current on their own?

Would be very interested to hear how that adult population of mussels got established in a private lake??!!
It's very simple. They got established by someone that was too entitled(or possibly uninformed)to follow the rules. That's the issue with the current system. It's based on the honesty of the boater and it only takes one dishonest boater.

we put a kayak on top of the houseboat, came back three months later and had adult mussels in the feet positions and other areas. are our kayakers and raft people cleaning their boats?
I do everything right with mine, but it's not like DNR is bothering to confirm that. Drive up the ramp on a weekday with 2 kayaks on top of the car and they won't even look up from their phone as they wave you past.

Never even been checked for my AIS cert at any lake even though I'm legally required to have one.

Help me understand this so that we can all learn. You stored a kayak right side up and it had some residual water in it from the lake and then maybe rain kept it replenished with water while you were gone for three months and that lake water turned into a full-blown population of adult mussels? So the lesson to be learned is store your kayak upside down?

Ironic how this was never an issue years ago when you could launch anytime anywhere and now with governing measures in place we have all these problems... $$$
It's not irony. It's just time. I believe quagga and zebra mussels are native to Ukraine. As boats travel around the world, the mussels eventually got transported to the US. Apparently the first quagga was discovered in North America in 1989. If you were boating before 1989, there was zero risk of spreading mussels in the US, because they didn't exist here. Once they are here, it is just a matter of time until they spread to any body of water where people are moving boats (or other equipment) in and out.

You think government rules *caused* the mussels to invade Lake Powell?

As much as I don't want to see muscles in all the lakes, I really question how effective all these decon measure are (as is now demonstrated). It seems like tons of wasted money, headaches and resources, but to end up where we were going anyway.

This sounds like the same “Money Grab” as the vehicle emission testing on the front range of Colorado. Thankfully I live in Clear Creek County and don’t have to worry about that testing. Sq

Really Richie ? Read and comprehend... Nah I will spell it out... The spread is inevitable just like the weather. Government is promoting the drama (once again inevitable) and banking money and "controlling" our freedoms to launch anytime/anywhere... BS money hoax

Unfortunately it only takes one "SCREW THE SYSTEM, I'LL DO WHATEVER I WANT" to negate the efforts of everyone else trying to do it right. So in that regard, I suppose some things are inevitable.
The issue is the whole "system" was setup to fail, but it has cost how much money and time over the past 20 years?

This "system" only focused on power boats, even though there are hundreds of other transportation methods that can also move substantial amounts of muscles between bodies of water. Many of these are human caused, but a study noted even ducks could be transporters (not to the extent of humans, but still).

No one is cleaning fishing gear, clothing, rafts, paddle boards etc. Up until a few years ago, these items were not even mentioned and mostly impractical to decon en mass and on a large scale. Even the decon areas I would argue are consistently letting infested watercraft through.

None of this was not intentional. It was bound to happen with hundreds of millions of items that could possibly be infected, carried between bodies of water by millions of people over decades.

Maybe instead of focusing on containment, they should have focused on how to mitigate and eliminate the muscles.
