I never measured the crappie taken in the picture, but you can see that my arm holding the fish is cocked back so that my face and the crappie can fit in the picture frame (unlike the picture above). I'm sure he was all of 17" - about the same as the one pictured above considering the tape measure starts at 1" 
I'm not dissing that crappie, it's really nice, but crappie like that can be caught regularly at Lake Powell, it was one of many similar crappie caught on that trip.
In my picture the width of my knuckle holding the fish is about 1" wide. My fish is about 18 knuckles long
