Hey all!

I've been lurking for a bit but decided to finally register an account. My two dogs and I are heading out for a couple of weeks in Utah mid-May, since my older dog is 13 yrs old, I decided to spend more of our trip at Lake Powell fishing and letting the pups swim and relax. I've fished Lake Powell a number of times from shore with both fly and spin rod (casting a fly to boiling stripers in September 2016 is top 5 fishing trips) and usually stay at Stanton Creek. Love the forum and look forward to learning more from you all prior to heading out!

It's not that striper is "bad" it's just best when fresh, and not as "good" as a few other species available at Powell. To my tastes the species rank:
  1. Walleye
  2. Crappie
  3. Smallmouth
  4. Largemouth
  5. Striper(Fresh)
  6. Catfish
  7. Striper(Frozen>1 month)
Enjoy your time on the lake.

Are they pretty mushy after being frozen? Of the ones I’ve cooked, I just filleted then cut into chunks on a bias. I’m with you on walleye being the best, I just don’t have awesome luck with them from shore (I’ve caught a few there but not fast and furious). My dad and I went out on Lake Huron the other day and got a couple on hardwater, delicious! I’ve never had either Largemouth or Smallmouth, sort of sacrilege here in the mitten but totally different fishery. What do they compare to?

I've never had much success catching carp. Never eaten it so find it difficult to rank.
Never eaten one either and don't plan on it any time soon. They hang around the pump out stations and I think I know why. Yuck

I’ve been bringing my Aussie and my late lab mix to the lake for about 10 years and haven’t had problems yet with mussel shells (Mira did tear a pad off at Wide Hollow up by Escalante one trip because she’s a spaz). My 1 1/2 year old Aussie has never been out west and he has some soft, uncalloused pads so we’ll see how he fares. I do have boots for both of them if they’re needed.

Striper is very good, if you do a few things:

Bleed and put on ice immediately.
Cut ALL the brown muscle off. This is not really necessary when they are fresh, but they will taste fishy once they are frozen.
Vacuum seal the the filets, or put them in a ziploc bag and fill with water to keep air out. I have packages of fish that I have done this with that still taste good after a year....
Frozen filets are not mushy at all. If fact, we catch a lot of walleye and crappy in the spring, and they are much mushier, even when fresh then the stripers. I believe it is from the stresses of the spawn, we almost only fish in March/April/May. The14-15" walleye that have not gone through the spawn are another story :) One caveat is this applies to fat healthy stripers, once they start getting even slightly skinny they are not worth the effort...

My wife and I bring our dogs down, they are bird dogs in very good condition, but even our old dog (made her last trip at 15) never have cut their feet. The main issue is always finding dead stuff and human Poo 🤢

Good info, thanks!!! I was thinking of bringing my vacuum sealer but not sure if it draws too much to run off of car with inverter, I guess I can experiment.

I’m so glad my dogs haven’t found any human poo to roll in!!
