Navajo Nation says upgrades needed at Antelope Point Marina

$31,000,000 federal supplemental disaster funding to address boat ramps and related infrastructure. That sounds like a step in the right direction...until you note that it goes only toward ramps controlled by Aramark. The feds have denied or ignored requests by Antelope Point to improve their facilities using their own money. Does this sound right to anyone?

Not only are the Navajos frozen out of federal funds to makes low water access possible, they are not even being allowed to spend their own money toward that same goal.

Meanwhile, Superintedant Billy Schott sends them threats of fines and citations, calling infrastructure improvements "not logical"? The Navajos are attempting to insure the survival of their business, and Glen Canyon NRA Superintendant Billy Shott seems intent on helping Aramark exclusively.

Follow the money. That sure seems like wise advise.

Billy Shott would like to portray himself as a "friend of the recreational boater", but it sure looks like he is an advocate for the interests of Aramark, at the expense of the Navajo Nation.

I'm not going to play the race card. Oh, too late. Having said that, we were up at Piute Farms in July '88 and upon returning to the parking area Dad found his three month-old Acura Integra was missing several useful parts, including the driver's-side window. That was the last time I saw him cry. Fortunately there was nothing of value in there. The mirrors, wipers etc. were replaced and he died that November.

They should be allowed to use their own money. Given their separate status they shouldn’t get federal funds. They should also be subject to recognized building and safety standards.

Unfortunately that happens at most remote launching facilities all around the southwest and not limited to the res.

There aren't any federal funds. The government is broke.
In truth, there is quite a bit of funding that is now gradually rolling out due to the infrastructure act that was passed a year or so ago with support of both parties in congress. Everyone seems to overlook this bill, which was quite an accomplishment, and much needed. Some of the infrastructure money, on the order of millions of dollars, comes directly to the Department of the Interior, and presumably some of this will be available to support ramp and marina upgrades at Lake Powell once folks figure out which future water levels to design for and where best to locate new facilities on what is likely to be a permanently lower lake.

Antelope Point has the only nice and well maintained facilities on the lake. I think they should just kick Aramark out and let them run the entire lake with the way they handle their own place. If they would put in a nice fish cleaning station , I doubt we would go back to Wahweap.
